The material surrounding the mare is of the Lower Imbrian epoch, while themare material is of the Upper Imbrian epoch.
The mare basalt covers a majority of the basin and overflows into Lacus Somniorum to the northeast.
The ring feature to the west of the mare is indistinct, except for Montes Haemus, The Serenitatis connects with Mare Tranquillitatis to the southeast.

The region of the Moon near the border between Mare Serenitatis and Mare Tranquillitatis is one of the most geologically and compositionally complex areas of the nearside (Figure 1).
The dark ring of outer Serenitatis mare material was interpreted as the unburied portion of an older, faulted mare surface, effectively reversing the albedo vs. age correlation postulated by previous workers.
In the particular region that we focused on, we were able to detect and map variations in mare basalt TiO2 abundance, in the abundance of fresh highlands materials emplaced on mare surfaces, and in the degree of spectral maturity of craters, ejecta, and mare.

The mare is bordered on the south by the Haemus Mountains and on the west by the Caucasus Mountains.
The 2 large craters to the north of Mare Serenitatis are Eudoxus and Aristoteles.
On the southern rim of the Mare is the crater Menelaus, with a ray stetching across the Mare, while further to the west is the crater Manilius.

Mare lava, for example, is exposed in the floor of a larger (90-km-diameter) crater on the west rim of Gagarin.
As lunar mare magma rose through the subsurface from a zone of melting at depth and reached the debris in the two crater floors, it may have lifted the debris and fractured it into segments l/2 to 2 km across.
The crater is largely filled by the younger mare unit; because the graben transects the crater rim and its trend is influenced by the crater, the graben is probably younger.

Along with various synthesized sounds, the material for 'Mare Serenitatis' also consists of two types of concrete sounds that happen to be used quite regularly in electronic music: birdsong and thunder.
Even though 'Mare Serenitatis' clearly consists of three main parts, the piece in fact proceeds in one single flowing movement.
Mare Serenitatis was composed in 2000 in the composer’s studio.

AMIE obtained the images on 18 March 2006 from distances between 1257 and 1213 kilometres from the surface, with a ground resolution ranging between 114 and 110 metres per pixel.
Mare Serenitatis is one of the lunar maria, that are vast lava plains on the lunar surface.
It formed between 3.9 and 3.8 thousand million years ago, a period in which the Moon was heavily bombarded by asteroids and the major impact basins on the Moon were formed.

Mare Serenitatis is virtually a circular formation measuring approximately 650 km in diameter in all directions and covers an area of slightly over 300,000 square km.
It is one of the smoothest mare, for the mare floor is characterized with its largest crater, Bessel, whose diameter only reaches 16 km.
The greatest characteristic features of Mare Serenitatis are perhaps the circular and walled plain formation Posidonius (95 km in diameter) on the northeast periphery and Dorsa Smirnov immediately to the west of Posidonius running north-south (130 km in length, 20 km in width).

The mare material within the basin consists of basalt in the intermediate to young age group of the Upper Imbrian epoch.
Theirregualr topography in and near this basin results from the intersection of the Tranquillitatis, Nectaris, Crisium, Fecunditatis, and Serenitatis basins with two throughgoing rings of the Procellarum basin.
Mare Serenitatis is seen in the upper left of the photo below.

Mare Tranquillitatis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mare Tranquillitatis ("sea of tranquility") is a lunar mare that sits within the Tranquillitatis basin on Earth's moon.
To the southeast is Mare Fecunditatis, to the northeast is Mare Crisium, to the northwest is Mare Serenitatis, and to the south is Mare Nectaris.
Mare tranquilitatis is also the name of a composition of music by composer Vangelis on his 1976 album, Albedo 0.39 and is in reference to the selenographical term.

Dark mare materials separate the rest of Mare Serenitatis from the rugged highlands to the east.
The Taurus-Littrow valley and its immediate surroundings have a lower albedo than most of Mare Serenitatis; the low albedo of the valley floor and the presence of dark "halos" around some of the craters led many scientists to believe, prior to the landing, that products associated with energetic volcanic eruptions should be present.
Mare Serenitatis is visible at the top of the picture, above the mountains.

They also explain why small mare patches are grouped together on the farside.
Thus, mare volcanism is most likely inside these basins, especially where younger craters have dug into the basin floor.

The mare plains were formed by low viscosity basalt lavas being erupted in large volumes.
Mare Orientale, the youngest large lunar basin, is only partly filled with basaltic lavas.
There are no direct measurements of the mare thicknesses, but radar sounding (Peeples et al, 1978) found discontinuities at 1.6-2km (Mare Serenitatis); 1.4km (center of Mare Serenitatis); 0.8-1.0km (peripheral shelf of Mare Serenitatis).
