Margalla Hills National Park has an area of 12,605 hectares located between 33o 40¢ - 33o 44¢ N and 72 o 55¢ -73 o 20¢ E and forms the north-eastern edge of Islamabad.
Khattak and Ahmed (1990) compared the vegetation on the north and south facing slopes of Margalla Hills and reported the presence of Pinus roxburgii-Apluda mutica-Quercus incana community on the north facing slopes and Acacia modesta- Woodfordia fruticosa-Dodonaea viscosa community on the south facing slopes.
Margalla Hills National Park has never been explored ethnobotanically before, so it was felt worthwhile to record the native uses of plants in this park before the information is lost.

At the end of the day all the garbage is conveniently pushed down the hill into the bushes where crows and other wild animals, which include monkeys and wild boars, gorge at it.
The environmentalists have urged the ministry to take similar action about the construction of restaurants on this side of Margallas if these hills are to remain a thing of beauty and a joy for the generations to come.

ISLAMABAD: The two bush fires that broke out on Margalla Hills Wednesday afternoon and continued to rage well past mid-night were finally put out at around 2.30 a.m by the staff of the Directorate of Environment of the Capital Development Authority (CDA).
He said it was by the stroke of luck that the second fire, which broke out behind Faisal Mosque area, was confined to a deep gorge and the 40 men deployed by the CDA to control this fire prevented it spreading any further.
"We would like to appeal to the people living in the Margalla Hills or visiting it, to be very careful and avoid any activities like throwing smouldering cigarette buts, burning match sticks or lighting a fire for picnicking in the jungle," Aulia Khan said.

These two friends, Mir Ajab Khan, Ph.D., a taxonomist in the Department of Biological Sciences at Quaid-I-Azam University and Haroon Niyazi, a Unani-Tibb physician of Rawalpindi, frequently explore the hills together to research local plant species, to identify and document habitats and plant uses among the local population.

To-gether with a student, Muhammad Ibrar Shin-wari, he has produced an ethnobotanical study of the Margalla Hills, the first published in Pakistan, in the hope of raising the awareness of researchers, environmentalists and conservationists to the situation in the area, and engaging them to discover and apply solutions informed by ethnobotanical knowledge.

Of 10 released Cheer Pheasants known to have been predated in the Margalla hills re-introduction programme, seven were taken by foxes, two by unidentified mammals and one by a Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus (Ridley and Islam undated).

Margalla Hills are not very high and the sun rays fall with equal intensity on the hills as well as the city.

Margalla hills in Islamabad received snowfall for the third time of the current winter on Saturday morning causing new spell of intense cold in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Murree received two feet more snow on Friday night setting new highest record of 16 feet at the hill station, a private TV channel reported.
