BBC NEWS | UK | UK Politics | Profile: Margaret Beckett
Mrs Beckett, like many in the Labour Party, has travelled a long way from a hard left stance in the early 1980s to become central to her prime minister's vision.
A party official and special adviser to minister Judith Hart in the early 1970s, she became MP for Lincoln in 1974 and served as a government whip and then a junior education minister until she lost her seat in 1979.
Mrs Beckett served as deputy leader of the party - the first woman to do so - under the late John Smith, and was acting leader of the opposition for three months in 1994.

Margaret Beckett: Britain's 1st female foreign secretary - Turkish Daily News May 06, 2006
Margaret Beckett's appointment on Friday as Britain's first female foreign secretary means two of the world's most powerful diplomatic jobs are now held by women.
When Conservative leader Margaret Thatcher became Britain's first woman prime minister in 1979 in the wake of widespread disaffection at Labour's inability to curb strikes and the economy, Beckett became a television researcher.
In 1983, Beckett was back in parliament as MP for Derby South, in central England, but began to moderate her views as the party sought to distance itself from the "loony left" fringe that dogged its reputation in the 1980s.

BECKETT: We could not agree that there should be circumstances in which it had to be a basic right that had to be delivered even if perhaps an employer still remained resistant.
BECKETT: Well, I repeat, there are a whole lot of procedures in the White Paper and the forty per cent is the final hurdle.
BECKETT: Well the approach, as always with these things, is that if you have an independent body which is reviewing these matters, they make their recommendations and obviously the Government has to take them very seriously.

Telegraph Blogs: Foreign: Peter Foster: November 2006: Margaret Beckett's call to arms
Just been listening to Margaret Beckett, the British Foreign Secretary (external affairs minister), giving a speech on the environment, urging India to join the 'low carbon' economy or face some pretty terrifying consequences.
As Mrs Beckett will know, having been a minister in the UK for many years, government is a blunt instrument - witness the lack of progress (relative to money spent) the current UK Labour Government has made on health, education etc after nearly 10 years in power.
As Mrs Beckett said, the developed world must face up to its responsibilities (and it has conspicuously failed so far) but without the new economies of India and China joining that mission, such schemes will be rendered meaningless.

 Rural Payments Agency - scandal
The NAO report reminds us that Margaret Beckett, (now, of course, appointed to the most important political job after PM), and Lord Bach were both warned in June 2005 that the scheme would not work - and that was seven months before it was even due to come into action.
Beckett's reputation has miraculously escaped the battering inflicted on that of her former cabinet colleague Charles Clarke, but the grisly displays of incompetence at her erstwhile brief, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), more than match those at the Home Office.
Margaret Beckett has made a statement to admit that the Rural Payments Agency does not expect to complete single farm payments before the EU deadline.

This came during a heated Commons debate in which a Liberal Democrat MP urged Mrs Beckett to examine the WMN's investigative series on the crisis - which showed that the typical dairy farmer in the region is facing losses of up to £24,000 a year.
In the paper's comment column, editor Barrie Williams said her response "serves to underline, once again, what a total waste of space Mrs Beckett and her department are when it comes to making a positive contribution to the future of farming".
WMN deputy editor Phillip Bowern told Holdthefrontpage: "We asked Margaret Beckett to write a piece for us - which she did - saying she does believe in English farmers, but basically saying that it's not for the Government to intervene in market forces and accepting that more dairy farmers will go out of business.
