Henry Courtenay, 1st Marquess of Exeter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henry Courtenay, 1st Marquess of Exeter, KG, PC (c.1496 – January 9, 1539) was the eldest son of William Courtenay, 1st Earl of Devon and Catherine of York.
At the time of his birth his paternal grandfather Edward Courtenay was still the Earl of Devon and his father was his eldest son and heir.
But in 1504, William Courtenay was accused of maintaining correspondence with Edmund de la Pole, 3rd Duke of Suffolk, the leading Yorkist claimant to the throne.

REDVERS and COURTENAY Families of early England - Pat Patterson's Genealogy Pages   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The Courtenays, as descendants of Mary de Redvers, daughter of the sixth earl, naturally laid claim to the earldom of Devon, and the whole of the Redvers property, upon the death of Countess Isabella.
Peter of Courtenay had, as we have seen, ascended the throne of Constantinople in 1217, but two years later he had died in captivity, and during the succeeding years, and until their final expulsion in 1261, his sons had certainly done nothing to redeem the prestige of their family.
The fortunes and misfortunes of the English Courtenays are equalled only by those of their French namesakes; but, unlike the latter, the former have always been enabled to stem the tide of adversity, and to keep themselves on the surface of the most troubled waters.

The case, Esturmy v Courtenay was then taken to the court of the Star Chamber and for several reasons was one of the most notable of that period.
Edward Courtenay also had his personal reasons for not responding to the summons, he felt that the jury were biased and that this was because of the influence of the Earl of Huntingdon, a rival in power.
It is interesting that had his cousin Hugh Courtenay, son of his father's brother, lived and had children, he would never have been earl and any such child would have been the nephew or niece of the Earl of Huntingdon and and half niece or nephew of King Richard 11.
