  margaret dumont | biography (1889-1965)
Margaret Dumont was a versatile actress who played a wide range of roles during her 60-year theatrical career, but she will always be remembered as the naive social climber who so confidently entrusted her rise in society to Groucho in seven Marx Brothers films.
She was playing in a musical, The Summer Widowers, when she met John Moller Jr, son of a wealthy businessman and a member of New York's socially prominent '400' families.
But in fact Margaret Dumont herself was far from naive about her contribution to A Day at the Races, for which she won the Screen Actors Guild award in 1937.

Originally an opera singer, American actress Margaret Dumont was engaged in 1925 to act in The Cocoanuts, a Broadway musical comedy starring the Marx Brothers.
It was for this picture that Dumont won a Screen Actor's Guild award; upon this occasion, film critic Cecilia Ager suggested that a monument be erected in honor of Dumont's courage and steadfastness in the face of the Marx invasion.
Dumont made her last professional appearance a week before her death, on the TV variety series Hollywood Palace; appropriately, it was in support of Groucho Marx in a re-creation of the "Hooray for Captain Spaulding" production number from Animal Crackers.

Margaret Dumont biography | the fifth Marx Brother | Groucho's foil
Margaret Dumont appeared with many comedians, including Jack Benny, Danny Kaye, Red Skelton, and W. Fields - but she is best known for her recurring role as the stodgy dowager straight man to Groucho Marx in many of the Marx Brothers‘ most popular films.
Margaret Dumont was born on October 20, 1882 as Daisy Juliette Baker, and as a girl she sang on the stage in both America and Europe under the name of Daisy Dumont.
Margaret Dumont went on to co-star with the Marx Brothers in many (not all) of their films, including Duck Soup (1933), A Night at the Opera (1935), A Day at the Races (1937), At the Circus (1939), and The Big Store (1941).

Dumont began her sixteen-year career with America's funniest family while they were still on stage, performing as the snotty socialite to Groucho's down-and-out hotel owner in the Broadway production of The Coconuts (1925).
Dumont even held her own in the infamously all-women cast of The Women (1939), a movie which featured Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Rosalind Russell, Mary Boland and Joan Fontaine.

As ever, Groucho plays a scheming wise guy who, when he isn't busy hustling dowager Margaret Dumont, teams with foils/accomplices Chico and Harpo to take the piss out of a pompous opera impresario (the great Sig Rumann) and an imperious tenor (Walter Woolf King).
The reason for all the shenanigans--to get comely singing lovebirds Allan Jones and Kitty Carlisle to center stage--barely matters amid the clatter and chatter of classic Marxism, a blizzard of sight gags (including the still dizzyingly funny stateroom scene), barely contained destruction (courtesy force-of-nature Harpo), and absurdist repartee.
