  Margaret Gorman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Margaret Gorman (1905-1995) is best known for being the very first Miss America, from the year 1921.
Gorman was chosen from a photo popularity contest and finalist round as the first "Miss Washington, D.C.," and was invited on that count to join the Second Annual Atlantic City Pageant as an honored guest.
Gorman continued to compete in later years, and though unsuccessful, was always a favorite of the crowds.

Six remaining finalists were escorted around the city throughout the summer and Margaret Gorman was chosen as the first "Miss Washington, D. C." The prize for the winner was a trip to the Second Annual Atlantic City Pageant as an honored guest.
The amateur prize, the Watkins Trophy, was awarded to Margaret Gorman, Miss South Jersey, Kathryn M. Gearon placed second, receiving $100 in gold.
Margaret did compete in succeeding years unsuccessfully, but she always remained a favorite of Atlantic City crowds.

Mary Gorman and her youngest child, David, were living on the Patrick Quealy farm in 1885 - the year after Margaret's death and a year before Patrick died.
After the birth of their first child Patrick and Margaret moved west and arrived in Minnesota, eventually taking up a claim in Eagan Twp in Dakota Co. There were several Gorman families that also settled in Eagan and they may have been related to Patrick's wife.
