Ralph E. Flanders, McCarthyism and the Censure of Joseph McCarthy
Flanders appeared at the church forum March 5, and Elizabeth French of Springfield, his secretary at the time, believes it was the crowd's criticism of McCarthy that led to the Vermont senator's decision that the hour was at hand for a public statement on the matter.
Flanders said he was subjected to "persistent" questioning by the press in Melbourne where "the same question appeared and reappeared at luncheons, dinners and informal meetings." The senator continued in his memoirs, "At last it became clear that the impression was gaining ground that an American brand of Naziism was in the process of formation.
Flanders said McCarthy's headline-grabbing ventures were diverting the nation's attention from Korea, Indochina, Italy, France and England--lands that were in need of this country's attention and help as they fought to maintain their governments in the face of communist challenges.

Margaret then married Philip the Bold, who became the first Valois Duke of Burgundy in 1364, as his brother succeeded to the throne of France as Charles V. Thus, the fortunes of Flanders pass into the House of Burgundy and ultimately to the Hapsburgs.
Marrying Margaret, the heiress of Flanders, Philip began a process of adding, by marriage and conquest, to the Burgundian domain, expanding it into a rival to the throne of France itself.
Flanders was one of the most prosperous places in Europe, giving the Duke a major source of revenue, and the Free County gave him a foothold in the Empire and in the old Kingdom of Burgundy.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Flanders
Flanders is an unpicturesque lowland, whose level is scarcely above that of the sea, which accounts for the fact that a great part of it was for a long time flooded at high water.
Flanders then received a French governor, but the tyranny of the French soon brought about an insurrection, in the course of which some 3000 French were slaughtered in Bruges, and at the call of the two patriots, de Coninck and Breydel, the whole country rose in arms.
Philip sent into Flanders a powerful army, which met with a crushing defeat at Courtrai (1302); after another battle, which remained undecided, the King of France resorted to diplomacy, but in vain, and peace was restored only in 1320, after Pope John XXII had induced the Flemings to accept it.

Ancestors of Margaret II of Flanders
Margaret II of Flanders was countess of Flanders from 1244 to 1278 and countess of Hainaut from 1244 to 1246. She was the younger daughter of Baldwin I of Constantinople, who was also count of Flanders and Hainaut, and Marie of Champagne.
She alleged that the marriage was invalid, and without much inspection of the facts of the case Pope Innocent III condemned the marriage, though he did not formally annul it. Bourchard and Margaret continued as a married couple, having 2 children, as their conflict with Jeanne grew violent and Bouchard was captured and imprisoned in 1219.
While he was in Rome, Jeanne convinced Margaret to re-marry, this time to William of Dampierre, a nobleman from Champagne. This situation caused something of a scandal, for the marriage was possibly bigamous, and violated the church's strictures on consangunity as well.
