In 1919 Margaret married the wealthy businessman William Preston, and settled in the Sydney Harbour-side suburb of Mosman.
Margaret Preston (1875-1963), although born in Adelaide, had a long and intimate relationship with the Art Gallery of New South Wales, from her first visit to the institution at the age of twelve.
Preston's vital, energetic and sometimes explosive personality affected all her met her: her widely proclaimed opinions on the state of art in Australia (and many other topics), and on the need to build a new 'national art' brought her both advocates and enemies.

Margaret Preston was one of the leading Modernist artists in Australia during the first half of the twentieth century.
Along with her paintings, Preston is renowned for her stunning wood and linoblock prints, which she was inspired to produce after studying Japanese prints and printmaking techniques in Paris in 1912.
In 1932, however, Preston moved to a property at Berowra in the hills of the Hawkesbury Basin and found inspiration in the flowers that grew in her garden, and in the surrounding bushland.
