Sullavan took this role (she acted only infrequently onscreen, much preferring the stage) to improve her comedy skills, but she's absolutely peerless: her delight over her "genuine foxine" tippet near the movie's end, and her subsequent bickering over its beauty with Morgan, are indescribably charming.
Marvelous comedy starring the great Margaret Sullavan, who is excellent as a naive girl who goes out of the orphanage where she has lived all of her life (in Budapest), to work as an usherette in a lavish cinema owned by Mr.
Margaret Sullavan is captivating as always as the pure-of-heart (and slightly loopy) heroine - a characterization she would come to perfect in later roles.

Brett & You: Remembering Margaret Sullavan
It's said that Sullavan never really took to film acting, that she always preferred the stage, and indeed, when she was on the outs with the various studio heads, as she reportedly often was, she would return to Broadway where she felt more at home.
She was known for being difficult in those days, and it's possible she was, of course, but even today, women are often held to different standards in the workplace, so one can only imagine how it must have been in the thirties and forties.

With her husky voice and unique, magnetic charm Sullavan was an immediate success, proving herself airy and delightful in comedy ("The Good Fairy" 1935, "The Shop Around the Corner" 1939) and wistful and poignant in drama ("Only Yesterday", her 1933 debut; "Three Comrades" 1938).
Sullavan suffered a number of mental health problems (including severe depression brought on partly by increasing deafness in middle age) and died of a drug overdose.

The Shop Around the Corner featuring Margaret Sullavan & James Stewart Movie and DVD page on ARTISTdirect
The Shop Around the Corner is one of the screen's best romantic comedies, and an excellent example of the subtle humor and wry character interplay that marked the films of director Ernst Lubitsch.
The plot -- likeable people (James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan) who are antagonists in real life but also anonymous pen pals are infatuated with each other -- is ripe with comic potential, but Lubitsch takes the material further, including several bittersweet subplots that give the film richness and texture.
The supporting performances are first-rate, particularly Frank Morgan and Joseph Schildkraut, and the film has the classy look that was a hallmark of MGM films of this era.

Though a versatile and subtle actress, who excelled in every film genre (including comedy), Margaret Sullavan was most typically used by Hollywood in tearful, soggy melodramas, such as her only Oscar-nominated role, as Robert Taylor's tubercular wife in Three Comrades, for which she had earlier won the New York Film Critics Circle Award.
Sullavan is best known for The Shop Around the Corner, which she made in the same year, and, of course, for Back Street (the second version), in which she played a woman in love with a married man (Charles Boyer), who can't divorce because it will ruin his career.
