Isla Margarita or Margarita Island (Spanish - Isla de Margarita) is the largest island of the Nueva Esparta State in Venezuela, situated in the Caribbean off the north eastern shore of the country.
In 1561, the island was seized by Lope de Aguirre, a notoriously violent and rebellious conquistador who held the islanders in a grip of terror until he returned to the mainland in an attempt to take Panama from the Spanish crown.
It was on Margarita Island that Simon Bolivar, later called the Libertador, was confirmed as Commander in Chief of the new republic, la gran Colombia.

The last flight to the Island leaves at 19.30 with Aeropostal, (flight VH 312); if your international flight arrives after 18.30 you will have to stay overnight in Caracas, if this is the case, Languages Abroad can arrange an over night stay for you in a local hotel.
There is also a Ferry boat to Margarita Island from Puerto La Cruz, but we do not recommend travel by land because the travel from Caracas to Puerto La Cruz is 5 hours and the ferry between 2 and 4 hours depending on the type of Ferry boat that you choose.
