Margariti, capital of the homonymous county of the prefecture of Thesprotia, is located 28 km southeast of Igoumenitsa, at the eastern foot of the mountains of Parga.
The agades (nobles) of Martariti, usurping the lands of the Ottomans of Ioannina in the region, transferred the capital of the county from Mazarakia to Margariti.
The seizure of Margariti was represented by the painter A. Vasilakis in a painting of Palacco Ducale, Venice.

 THE CHALLENGE TO PRESERVE THE CHAM HERITAGE
The most important urban monuments are at Paramithia and Margariti, and in small towns like Perdika.
Paramithia has a large Cham tower kulla that is wrongly ascribed by the Greek local authority as ‘Venetian’, and a magnificently situated Ottoman fortress which it is made very difficult to access.

 Museum News
Roxani Margariti from Princeton University (the Society's 1998-99 Shaykh Hamad Fellow in Islamic Numismatics) presented the more spectacular examples of the Society's newest Arab-Byzantine accession, the collection of John J. Slocum (presented to the Society late last year by his son Jerry), which contains some 400 early Islamic copper coins.
A small exhibit of the coins prepared by Margariti was also available for direct inspection.
Peter Lampinen, fresh from the Caesarea excavations in Israel, discussed some of his latest discoveries in the aptly named "New Finds from Caesarea." While this season's material needs to be linked to ongoing stratigraphic studies at the site, a number of interesting finds emerged from the current work around the South Temple platform.
