Margiana (Old Persian Marguš): district in the Karakum desert, modern Mary (or Merv) in the southeast of Turkmenistan.
Margiana was situated on the boards of the river Murghab; this river, which was called Margos by the ancient Greeks, has its sources in the mountains of Afghanistan and flows to the north, into the Karakum desert, where it divides into several branches that disappear in the desert sands.
Margiana must have been conquered by the Achaemenid king Cyrus the Great.

Merv - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alexander the Great's visit to Merv is merely legendary, but after his death, Merv became the chief city of a province (Margiana) of the Seleucid, Parthian and Sassanid kingdoms.
On the Margus River— called the Epardus by Arrian and now the Murghab— stood the capital of the district, named Antiochia Margiana, ("Antioch of the Margiana") by Antiochus Soter, who rebuilt the city, in a greatly enlarged plan, almost two kilometers across.
After Ardashir I (ca 220-240) took Merv, the study of numismatics picks up the thread: a long unbroken direct Sassanian rule of four centuries is documented from the unbroken series of coins originally minted at Merv.

In his recent book, Margiana and Proto-Zoroastrism, V.I. Sarianidi argues that the temple-cult for which he found indications in Margiana is a predecessor of the Zoroastrian rituals centering around Haoma and fire.
Vogelsang, however, argues that it is not likely that the nomadic or semi-nomadic Indo-Europeans got settled in the BMAC buildings, though they may have been in close contact with this urbanized culture, and may have been influenced by their rituals, perhaps including rituals in which Ephedra and other plants were employed.

Alexandria in Margiana - WCD (Wiki Classical Dictionary)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Alexandria in Margiana is mentioned by Pliny the Elder (NH 6.67-67) and is probably one of the towns that was founded in 328 or 327 by Alexander the Great or his right-hand-man Craterus as an instrument against the horsemen of the Sogdian leader Spitamenes.
By settling a Macedonian garrison in the oasis of Margiana (modern Mary), the Sogdians were unable to use it as a base.
Again, it was a military settlement, intended to guard Iran against incursions from nomad tribes, such as the Parni, who were to overrun this region and to found the Parthian empire in what is now Iran and Iraq.

The presence in Margiana of Seleucid and Graeco-Bactrian coins confirmed the political influence and possessions of the Hellenistic rulers in this area.
The question to be resolved is when the Parthians conquered Margiana – just after the death of Eucratides I between 145 and 129 BC or earlier, when Margiana – as one of two provinces lost by the Bactrians – was conquered by the Parthians [Justin, XL, 6].
Stable Parthian rule in Margiana between the 2nd century BC and the 2nd century AD is demonstrated by the numismatic evidence.

The fact that these language families are of far less interest to the archaeologist may have a great deal to do with the fact that it is primarily speakers of Indo-European in search of their own roots who have addressed this problem.
He offers three models, each of interest, none supported by archaeological evidence, one of which is that the Bactrian Margiana complex was Indo-Iranian and came to dominate the steppe lands, serving as the inspiration for the emergence of fortified settlements such as Sintashta in the southern Urals.

Nevertheless Russian archaeological data based on numismatic evidence, the inscriptions in Karosthi, and the study of the Chinese Buddhist texts translated by the Parthian monks indicate the early onset of Buddhism in the Oxus region including Margiana.
