Karl Friedrich was the son of Hereditary Prince Friedrich of Baden and Anna of Nassau-Dietz-Orange (October 13, 1710 – September 17, 1777), the daughter of William Friso of Nassau-Dietz-Orange.
Born on 22 November 1728 in Karlsruhe, Karl Friedrich was the son of the Kronprinz of Baden, Friedrich von Baden-Durlach (1703-1732) and of Anne Charlotte von Nassau-Dietz-Orange (1710-1777).
Margrave of Baden-Durlach, Karl Friedrich inherited the branch of Baden-Baden in 1771, became electro of Baden in 1803 and Grand-Duke in 1806.

During the wars of the reign of Louis XIV of France the margravate was ravaged by French troops, and the margrave of Baden-Baden, Louis William[?] (died 1707), figured prominently among the soldiers who resisted the aggressions of France.
The Baden contingent continued to assist France, and by the peace of Vienna[?] in 1809 the grand-duke was rewarded with accessions of territory at the expense of the kingdom of Württemberg.
The troops of Baden took a conspicuous share in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870; and it was Grand Duke Frederick of Baden, who, in the historic assembly of the German princes at Versailles, was the first to hail the king of Prussia as German emperor.

Margrave Christopher I of Baden (1475-1527) had in 1503 united all the family territory, but the division in 1533 between his two sons Bernhard III and Ernest separated the margravate into two parts which were not reunited until 1771.
Margrave William (1622-77), however, after many reverses, succeeded with the aid of the Catholic party in the Empire in gaining the undisputed mastery of the margravate.
