A number of justifications have been offered in the literature to show that Margrave Arnold of Valenciennes († 1011) was related with Bishop Balderich II of Liège (1008-1018) via the earlier Bishop Balderich’s family, in light of which the onomastic of the Valenciennes and Looz families makes descent from Count Nevelung probable.
These two must be distinguished because Giselbert II marries Liutgard of Namur, while Giselbert I appears to marry a Herelint who affiliates somehow with the counts of Verdun.
The mother need not be specifically of the house of Verdun: she could even be a sister of Margrave Balderich, whose mother was of that house and could thus bring the names Godfrey and Adalbero to Looz.
