Eye Weekly - Songs from cold seas - 06.05.97
Boine is from the northernmost part of Norway, a region the native Sami people, or Lapps, call Samiland.
Boine's music is easier to describe by negations -- it's not acoustic folk music of any particular tradition, and it's not recognizable as "Nordic." She chants, she wails, she whispers, she sobs and yes, she sings.
Ultimately, though, Mari Boine's music is most linked to others who have come from a tradition where living in harmony with the land is something that has been taken from them.

Bear with me. Mari Boine has almost single-handedly resurrected indigenous Sami music with its keen sense of a spiritual connection with nature, from the oblivion to which Christian evangelism consigned it.
Stigmatised as blasphemous and pagan, even Mari Boine’s Christian parents were doubtful of her determination to breathe life in to their musical heritage with a superb fusion with modern musical instruments and idioms — for example rock, folk and jazz.
Mari’s voice is modulated to blend with the lightness of the melody and sound.
