Maria (Jane Siberry album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was an abrupt departure from her hit 1993 album, When I Was a Boy -- instead of that album's sophisticated pop, Maria was a jazz album.
It was also her first album not to include any musical contributions from longtime collaborators such as Ken Myhr, John Switzer and Rebecca Jenkins.
In addition, the final track on the album, "Oh My My", was a 20-minute meditation on lost innocence which closely resembled the teachings of 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, and included passages quoted from "Puff the Magic Dragon" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb".

Jane's Sheeba releases so far have comprised of a odd collection of random sounds (A Day in the Life), songs written when she was a teenager (Teenager), three live CDs (the New York Trilogy), and now Hush, a collection of folk standards.
Jane may have felt overly pressured and constricted when she was on a major label, but they gave her the time, money, and production assistance required to create a true masterpiece--When I Was a Boy.
Maria, a quasi-live jam session (in the last track of the album proper, she sings little introductions of the musicians) firmly rooted in the jazz vocabulary, reaches new heights--penetrates new depths--in the abstract representation of human emotion.

Inspired perhaps by her pal Holly Cole, Jane Siberry shapes her surprisingly malleable voice and impressionistic lyrics to a variety of free-form moods whipped up by a skilled ensemble.
Jane Siberry has remained one of the most extreme acquired tastes in music ever since she emerged with the revenge fantasy "Mimi On The Beach" in 1984.
The musical backings on Siberry's work have often aided this dramatic, mystical singer/songwriter's undoubted vocal ability, but have been greatly varied from synth-rock in her early years to unaccompanied folk.

Her eponymous debut album (reissued a decade later with upgraded packaging) is a low-budget, folk-oriented affair.
Count Your Blessings is a Christmas album — featuring Siberry, Cole, Jenkins, Mary Margaret O'Hara and Victoria Williams — recorded live in concert in 1993 for a CBC broadcast.
The musical material for these ten tracks was recorded in a single three-day session with a jazz quartet; Siberry then constructed songs from her favorite passages.

Siberry performs with renewed excitement and spontaneity - the result of laying down the basic track for the disk in a three-day burst of creativity.
Siberry took the tracks home, chose her favourite segments of the extended rhythmic jams, then spent the following three months in her make-shift living room studio adding vocals.
Maria has two distinct sections: the first nine songs, and the final track,"Oh My My," a 20-minute piece that weaves like a dream spell. They are separated by a two-minute space.

No Borders Here: Articles: CMJ: Oct 1995
Jane Siberry's voice doesn't keep you on the edge of your seat.
Surprisingly, with no studio fuss at all, Siberry's voice is just as angelic, fluttering between the bell-like quality of Tim Ray's jazz piano and the slaps and pulses of Chris Thomas' stand-up bass.
As a lyricist, Siberry relies on prettiness rather than profundity, but the way she sings a phrase as simple as "It was a snowy night, and our caravan moved along in starlight" makes you think it's the best damn poem you've ever heard.

"Maria" was Siberry's effort at a jazz album, being recorded live in the studio with a jazz band including pianist Tim Ray, drummer Brian Blade, bassist Christopher Thomas, trumpeter David Travers-Smith and percussionist Ian McLauchan.
This was evident on the title track, where Siberry appears to be singing an almost-religious invocation with the repeated "Maria, Maria", and on the beautifu standout track "See The Child", which was a most haunting and powerful tale of a lost child and a community's effort to find him.
Maria is to be taken as a work, not as separate songs.

TWAS 34: Jane Siberry, Cardigans, Scarlet
Jane Siberry originally earned my affections, eleven years ago, by making one of the greatest mini-epics of the New Wave era, the joyful "Mimi on the Beach", which was one of the only songs to ever coherently encapsulate its entire aesthetic into just its title (provided you get the Glass reference).
While Jane's personality comes through frequently in the compositions, if you took her heavenly voice off the tracks and her name off the cover, I'm certain I'd never pay this album the slightest bit of attention.
By concluding the album with a cover of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", which people who were really like this would never have heard of, they reveal that their style is a product of careful, world-wise calculation, not refreshing naivete.

Although her albums from the mid-'80s such as No Borders Here and The Speckless Sky are tied to the dated sonics of that era, Jane survived the Machine Age and went on to produce works that still transcend easy labeling.
In the last few years Jane has left the security (and frustrations) of a major record label behind for the freedom (and frustrations) of pursuing her own path.
Talking with Jane is much like listening to her albums - her thought patterns, like her music, are taken to eccentric flights and elliptical fancies.

Schubert's Ave Maria is a secular "lied" based on Sir Walter Scott's "Lady of the Lake".
But what struck me about this particular album is that not only does it contain a hodge-podge of overplayed and overvalued music along a common theme, but several of the tracks don't even seem to follow that theme.

In accordance with the inventive nature of Siberry’s music and SHEEBA Records, in 1998 she devised a series of three-part, weekend-long Siberry Salons, which consisted of two performances, a workshop, and dinner at intimate, non-typical venues such as art galleries and loft apartments.
In the future for Siberry is the 2001 release of her newest recording CITY that is comprised of collaborations with artists as diverse as Peter Gabriel, Joe Jackson, Nigel Kennedy, Sotoma Takafumi, Ghostland, Hector Zazou, and Barney the purple dinosaur.

Following on from the mystical, impenetrable When I Was A Boy, Jane Siberry, as always, moved on to completely different territory with Maria.
The second half of Maria is dominated by the twenty-minute "Oh My My" which again shows Siberry's spiritual focus and her dis-satisfactions with many aspects on modern life, and a rendition of the traditional tale "Mary Had A Little Lamb", which would of course put off some.
On the whole, this is Siberry's easiest album for the uninitiated, yet retains the exceptional beauty she was capable of.

Rather than just knocking off early and heading home, Siberry seized the day and spontaneously recorded a batch of songs she had written in her youth.
With only guitar, piano and her own overdubbed vocal harmonies, Siberry sings in an intimate fashion and creates a quiet musical magic that captures the sweet innocence of her youth.
Predictably, there are a young girl's odes to her family and other teen concerns, but Siberry's artistic muse was emerging even in her early adolescence.

A modern troubadour, Jane Siberry graduated from playing coffeehouses in the 1980s to major-label success in 1993 with "Calling All Angels," her duet with K.D. Lang.
This release chooses carefully from her entire oeuvre and ultimately captures the quirky, tender magic Siberry has created during every phase of her career.
Tracks include her first hit, "Mimi on the Beach," a curious, half-spoken/half-sung track with a feminist twist (one of Siberry's trademarks), and "Temple," a full-voiced song of longing, produced by Brian Eno for her album, WHEN I WAS A BOY.

The second part of "Maria" was taken up by "Oh My My", a 20-minute epic dedicated apparently to Siberry's mother and brother.

While "Temple" may draw an easy comparison to Kate Bush, there's a deceptively effortless sense to much of Siberry's ethereal musical adventures that only underscores their power; jazz, folk, classicism, and techno inform her work, yet seldom call attention to themselves.

Though Siberry was initially a folky coffeehouse singer-songwriter, the 10 songs on MARIA are art-jazz experiments seemingly more influenced by Cathy Berberian than Joni Mitchell.
The first nine songs are tightly-wound, impeccably arranged tunes which take seemingly random left turns at unexpected points, all topped with Siberry's usual evocative although almost impenetrable lyrics.

Back in Exposé #20 I gushed about Emily Bezar's first three albums, and honestly the only negative I can come up with for her new release is the fact that it took so long to arrive.
Her debut album draws from varied song traditions, from art-pop to Webern.
Operatic soprano and composer Bezar's intriguing debut solo album (after her role in the art-rock Potato Eaters) disregards known musical categories as she merges contemporary "classical" music with pop, into something that approaches 90's art song.
