		Justice Maria Berenice Dias of the state of Rio Grande do Sul is the founder of the Brazilian Institute of Family Law and is currently its vice-president (in 2006).
		Dias was the very first female judge to take the bench in her home state.
		She also became a nominee to the Supreme Court of Justice of Brazil at the start of 2006.

		Maria Berenice Dias (born in 1948 in the city of Santiago, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) is a progressive Brazilian judge, the first woman to take the bench in her home state of Rio Grande do Sul.
		While she is well known to be a long-time defender of women's rights she also became a great champion fighting on behalf of the human rights of persons of sexual minority, especially defending the right of same-sex couples as alternative families, to have their unions officially recognized by the State of Brazil.
		Maria Berenice Dias always maintains her insistence in recognizing same-sex couples as family units based on their free, mutual and permanent in nature homoaffectivity towards one another, made of her a true pioneer and a beloved friend of the members of the Brazilian Homosexual Movement (Movimento Homossexual Brasileiro) and of the GLBTTQ community of Brazil.
