The singer on that early project was Maria Farantouri, the great voice of resistance and hope in the era of the military junta, and Theodorakis’ important ally.
Karaindrou and Farantouri had known each other as students in Athens in the 1960s and even played very briefly in a folk band together.
They met again in France, Farantouri staying at Karaindrou’s apartment: “Maria really encouraged me to work on composing songs,” Eleni recalls.

In the '90s, Mikis Theodorakis had a major asset in singer Maria Farantouri, who handles all of the vocals on Poetica.
Blessed with a gorgeous voice and a fantastic range, Farantouri brings a great deal of charisma and humanity to such Theodorakis melodies as "With Half a Moon," "Color of Love"...
Interestingly, Poetica wasn't recorded in Greece, but was recorded for the German Peregrina label at a studio in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

Given recent antisemitic remarks by Mikis Theodorakis, some might question the inclusion of a recording of "The Songs of Songs" from his Mauthausen Cantata.
Yet, hearing Maria Farantouri's voice as she sings the familiar lament, I, myself, am glad.
This is followed by a lovely Greek lament sung by Costas Tsicaderis, "The Song of the Dawn." Next are welcoming poems by Klezmania and Kavisha Mazzella.
