This marked Sutherland's first performances of Donizetti's "Maria Stuarda", and proved to be a wonderful assumption.
It should also be pointed out that this is not the Maria Stuarda with Pavarotti which is praised in the Penguin Guide.

Edita Gruberova — Maria Stuarda; Carmen Oprisanu — Elisabetta; et al; Chorus and Orchestra of Munich Radio/Marcello Viotti.
She brings a true nostalgic yearning to Maria's first aria, "O nube che lieve per l'aria"; its cabaletta is brilliant, but, surprisingly, virtually unornamented in its second stanza.
Maria Stuarda may not be the greatest among Donizetti's operas, but few of them have been so generously treated on records.

Edita Gruberova - Donizetti's Tudor Queens (Anna Bolena · Maria Stuarda · Roberto Devereux) |...
The same applies to the other roles, Mary Stewart and Queen Elizabeth I. Donizetti's Maria Stuarda deals with the tragedy of the Catholic queen Mary, who, according to the fictitious opera, insulted Elizabeth I and rivaled her as Queen.
Perhaps it is true that she is not as good as Beverly Sills in the department of the Donizetti Tudor Queens- Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux.
In Maria Stuarda, she again impresses the listeners with her incredible breath control (those bel canto operas have such LONG VOCAL LINES between breaths)and her vulnerability and humanity shines through.

Listening to the recordings again my own adoration is confirmed: although the voice is not to everybody's taste and she sometimes does make some seriously ugly sounds, her commitment to the music and the drama is such that one is almost involuntarily won over by her.
Dramatically she is as convincing as Anna and Maria as she is as Elizabeth, although the latter role definitely causes her to pull out all the proverbial stops.
I rate Maria Stuarta the weakest of the operas despite a more than exciting scene in the garden where the two rival queens confront each other (and this recording is the ONLY one where the fire really flies).

Elizabetta is a relatively short role; after the climactic scene with Maria at the end of Act 2, Elizabetta all but disappears.
As her opposite number, Maria Stuarda, Majella Cullagh knew how to caress a Donizettian line; after all she has done a number of projects with Opera Rara who specialise in Italian works of this period.
Her Maria Stuarda mixed tenderness with an iron will all expressed within the bounds of some simply lovely Donizettian cantilena.

Maria Stuarda was, of course, one of her signature roles, and her agility, warmth and delicacy of phrasing easily explain why.
This was the year of her Covent Garden debut, and at thirty-nine she had the world at her feet.
José Carreras, just twenty-six at the time of this recording, had made his London debut with Caballe in Maria Stuarda the year before; 1972 was the year of his U.S. debut at New York City Opera.

Almost no form of art, and no type of artist, has been immune to such attacks and the history of this week's opera, Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, is another example.
But the famous soprano Maria Malibran liked Donizetti's first version better, and she was singing the title role of Mary Stuart.
For decades, only the "presentable," censored version was performed and that may be the main reason that Maria Stuarda, one of Donizetti's most fascinating and moving operas, has only recently regained its place in the world's opera houses.

This Maria Sturada is bold, excellent and highly dramatic, truly a must have for fans.
Even if the singers are obscure, they are still terrific and pack a powerful punch, especially the lead sopranos of Maria Stuarda and Queen Elizabeth who deliver tour de force performances, especially impressive is their confrontation scene.

Joan Sutherland's portrayal of one of Donizetti's Queens amazes and stuns as she courses through the florid Donizettian bel canto lines with sheer ease and power rivaled only by Caballe and Beverly Sills.
Maria Stuarda is one of Donizetti's most dramatic operas, alongside with Lucrezia Borgia and Roberto Devereux.
Besides, the moving music of Maria Stuarda is conducted with mastery and dramaticism.
