Interview: Marian Keyes | Review | The Observer
Marian Keyes has had her troubles, and her witty, warm novels tackle bleak issues.
But the happy endings make her happy too, and since happiness for Keyes is a precious commodity, she won't be giving them up in a hurry.
I'd be opening my veins.' Keyes says this in a way that makes me laugh, but later, listening to the tape, I think of the time in 1993 when she tried to end it with antidepressants washed down with vodka.

ANGELS is my introduction to the writing of Marian Keyes, and I have heard a lot of positive things about her.
Unfortunately, ANGELS is probably not one of her best works, as so many of these same people have told me. My main gripe with the book is that although the story was entertaining and funny, I found that it went on and on, and sometimes i felt it wasn't going anywhere.

Marian Keyes consistently tackles controversial or serious subjects with wit and humor (in WATERMELON Claire's husband announces that he's leaving her for another woman - the day their baby is born; in THE LAST CHANCE SALOON a group of singles from Ireland living in London tackle issues such as obesity and homosexuality).
That's not to say she glorifies it, but with Rachel's narration, readers feel the sadness at her situation, and are also caught smiling at the circumstances Rachel finds herself in.

Keyes, an Irishwoman, first published this book in England in 1996.
But Lucy hangs in there with the unreliable Gus, wrestles with her feelings while her good buddy Daniel dates her roommate, and manages a family crisis, all the while keeping her chin up and her quips coming fast and furious.
She also goes out with Chuck, a poorly drawn cliché of an American boor (another reason Keyes needs to watch something like the Lifetime channel, so she can write American boors better next time) and finds herself attracted to the irreverent Jed, who replaces Hetty at work.
