		Marian Nelson McLawhorn is a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the state's ninth House district, including constituents in Pitt county.
		A resident of Grifton, North Carolina, McLawhorn is currently (2003-2004 session) serving in her third term in the state House, where he holds the position of Democratic Whip.
		Owens filed for re-election from the realigned ninth House district (portions of Pitt county) in the 2004 General Assembly election; she stands unopposed to be elected in November 2004 to her fourth term in the legislature.
