 USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN-658) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN-658), a Benjamin Franklin-class ballistic missile submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a key proponent of California statehood.
Mariano G. Vallejo was decommissioned on 9 March 1995 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 9 March 1995.
Ex-Mariano G. Vallejo entered the Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program in Bremerton, Washington, on 1 October 1994 and on 22 December 1995 ceased to exist.

Mariano G. Vallejo, born 7 July 1808 at Monterey, Calif, entered the Monterey Presidial Academy in 1823.
Vallejo was laid down 7 July 1964 at the Mare Island Division, San Francisco Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, Calif.; launched 23 October 1965; sponsored by Miss Patricia O. McGettigan, great‑great‑granddaughter of General Vallejo; and commissioned 16 December 1966, Comdr.
Mariana G. Vallejo, with two complete, equally trained crews, rotated at regular intervals to maximize patrol “on station” time, conducted shakedown and training exercises along the west coast, in the Caribbean, and off the coast of Florida.

Vallejo (PF-97) was projected as a Tacoma-class frigate, but her construction was cancelled in December 1943.
Vallejo (CL-112) was projected as a Fargro-class light cruiser to be built at Camden, N.J., by the New York Shipbuilding Corp. under a 9 July 1942 authorization; but her construction was cancelled on 5 October 1944.
Vallejo (CL-146) was laid down as a Worcester-class light cruiser on 16 July 1945 at Camden, N.J., by the New York Shipbuilding Corp. However, her construction was cancelled on 8 December 1945; and her hulk was subsequently scrapped.

USS MARYLAND (SSBN 738), the fifth TRIDENT II (D5) Ohio Class SSBN, was delivered to the Navy during ceremonies at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics, Groton, CT. USS MARYLAND honors the seventh state of the Union.
USS NEBRASKA (SSBN 739) was commissioned during ceremonies at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, New London, CT. The principal speaker for the event was the Honorable J. James Exon, U.S. Senator, State of Nebraska.

 SSBN 658 History
The “Valley-Joe” was launched on October 23, 1965 in Mare Island, Vallejo, California and was christened by Patricia O. McGettegan, great-great-granddaughter of General Vallejo.
The Vallejo, the Bolivar, and the Jackson were the last three of the original Boomers to make Deterrent Patrols.
The Vallejo was decommissioned on May 27, 1994 in Charleston.

VALLEJO - Vallejo High School administrators have taken a new approach to the decades-old musical-taste battle between adults and teens: Not only are songs with profanity and sexual content banned from the Vallejo High campus, but the instrumental versions of those songs are prohibited as well.
Vallejo principal Phil Saroyan, the school's vice-principal Lloyd Cartwright, and the school's activities director John Lammon did not return repeated phone calls last week for comment on the policy.

As a soldier and as a statesman, General Vallejo was one of the first of the long line of courageous Mexican-Americans who have fought so bravely for freedom and worked so tirelessly for peace.
After the parades, the performances, and the speeches the 658 was christened by her sponsor, Patricia O. McGettigan; great-great-granddaughter of General Vallejo.

With the reduction in European tension and the end of the Cold War it was announced on 6 February 1991 that the Holy Loch Base would close, and in March 1992 the last US Navy ship sailed out, thus ending a thirty one year era of America presence in the Dunoon area.

Thus the Navy decided to borrow a page from the Extended Refit Program (ERP) book and a C3 to C4 SSBN "backfit" program was initiated in mid- 1976.
Following the deployment on 20 October 1979 of TRIDENT I (C4) missiles on the Francis Scott, other selected SSBNs were backfitted with the C4 [referred to as follow-on backfits].
Two additional SSBNs of this class (655 and 658) underwent the "pierside backfit" while three others (640, 641, and 643) were backfitted during their normally-scheduled second shipyard overhauls.

(The "G" stands for guided missle) This missile system later proved to be unsatisfactory due to improvements in ballistic missile technology.
The two submarines were cut in two and cylindrical hangers installed above the bows to carry the missiles.  Automatic loading and firing gear enabled the submarines to surface, extract the Regulus missile from its hanger straight onto an inclinded launching ramp, thus allowing the submarine to fire the missile and submerge immediately.
The Polaris A-1 first fired by the GEORGE WASHINGTON had an impressive range of 1,200 nautical miles.  However, this was immediately increased by the incorporation of the new improved Polaris A-2 by 300 nautical miles to 1,500 miles.

November 20, 1968 - USS FRANCIS SCOTT KEY (SSBN 657) returned to Charleston, South Carolina, and thus marked the successful completion of the 600th deterrent patrol by Units of the POLARIS submarine force, and the equivalent completion of 100 patrol years on the POLARIS submarine patrolling completely submerged for 100 years.
November 22, 1974 - The Gold Crew of USS MARIANO G. successfully launched four POSEIDON (C-3) missiles in the eighth Operational Test.
November 26, 1985 - USS ALASKA (SSBN 732), the seventh TRIDENT submarine, was delivered to the Navy by the shipbuilder Electric Boat Division, General Dynamics Corporation, Groton, CT.

Is at the Naval and Historical Museum in Vallejo, CA.
A former SSBN-658 crew member, James Carter, had the plaque made in 1999 and it is now displayed with the remains of USS MARIANO G, VALLEJO SSBN-658 at Mare Island.
Carter says that there is a building on Mare Island that is marked to become a museum of the shipyard and the 658 sail is to be the centerpiece.

The number of submarines being supported by SUBRON 14 varied over the years and the measure of that is that on 2 April 1987 the 2500th Ballistic Missile Deterrent Patrol was completed by USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN-658).
Attached to SUBRON 14 during its time in the loch were three Navy tugs: USS Natick (YTB-760), USS Saugus (YTB-780), and USS Piqua (YTB-793), which were kept extremely busy by the demanding schedules of the submarines that SUBRON 14 served.

But some of my fondest memories are of the time we served together on Mariano G. Vallejo.
I distinctly remember one mid-watch in 1969 or 1970, when you were OOD and a group of us were shooting the bull in the Control Room.
