Mariano Ignacio Prado (1826-1901) was twice the President of Peru, from (1865-68, 1876-79).
Prado's intentions were to participate in that year's elections which, surprisingly, he won.
Prado took active measures to prepare for defence by leaving for Tacna and later Tarapaca (where he met Bolivian president Hilarión Daza), with the intention of taking command of the armies assembling there.

In 1866 both countries settled their territorial differences by means of the subscription of a treaty that established the parallel 24 as limit, but they agreed the division for parts similar of the earnings for the salitre exploded by companies of Chilean capital and British among the parallel 23 and 25.
The difference between both competitors were abysmal, reason for the one which Daza, as it had advanced it in their letter to the Prefect Zapata, requested the attendance of the Peru agreement with the defensive treaty that both countries had subscribed secretly in 1873, and whose content was of the Chilean government's knowledge (1).
When assuming the presidency, Mariano Prado found his limited options and as the Peru sank in a financial crisis again, he could not make the corrections of the case.

Prado also had a valuable library of more than 40,000 books containing priceless first editions and manuscripts, which was located in the family's summer home built by his father in Chorrillos, and a private museum with prehispanic, colonial and republican artifacts.

He was finally allowed to come back to Peru in 1879, taking advantage of the War of the Pacific (1879 – 1883) with Chile.
During the course of these events, Piérola also took advantage of president Mariano Ignacio Prado's absence and he launched a successful coup d'etat, taking full power in December 23, 1879 and declared himself Peru's commander-in-chief.
After Chilean forces invaded Lima in 1881, Piérola had to abandon the capital and leave for Ayacucho, yet was unsuccessful commanding Peruvian forces from there also.

The worldwide depression of 1873 virtually sealed Peru's fate, and as Pardo's term drew to a close in 1876, the country was forced to default on its foreign debt.
With social and political turmoil once again on the rise, the Civilistas found it expedient to turn to a military figure, Mariano Ignacio Prado (1865-67, 1876-79), who had rallied the country against the Spanish naval attack in 1865 and then served as president.
