Maribor (German: Marburg an der Drau) is a city in Slovenia, the seat of the Maribor urban municipality.
Maribor lies on the river Drava at the meeting point of the Pohorje mountain, the Drava valley, the Drava plain and the Kozjak and Slovenske gorice hill ranges.
Maribor, previously in the Diocese of Graz-Seckau, became part of the Diocese of Lavant on 1 June 1859.

The Maribor area was populated with smaller settlements in the late Bronze Age, the late Iron Age, and the Roman period.
Maribor was mentioned for the first time in documents from the 12th century as Marchpurch castle (its Slovene name “Maribor” came into use in 1836), in 1182 it was mentioned as the center of a provostship, and in 1189 as the seat of a parish.
Maribor acquired city status before 1254 when the city walls were built to form a complete city organism and the first streets developed within the walls.

Maribor is situated 269.5 m above sea level, 15d 39' 12" E longitude and 46d 33' 39" N latitude, as measured from the southwest corner of the Castle chapel.
To the north, Maribor is ringed by the surroundings hills that are are enhanced by vineyards that occupy acreage extending into Maribor itself, thus lending the city a special charm.
To the southwest, Maribor is protected by the eastern slope of the Pohorje mountain chain.
