Maricao, at the western edge of the mountains, is a small town set around a small plaza in hilly terrain, north of San Germán;, Sabana Grande and Yauco; south of Las Marias and Lares; southeast of Mayagüez; and west of Adjuntas.
The town borders the Maricao Fish Hatchery, a collection of tanks and ponds in a garden setting, where some 25,000 fish are raised yearly to stock farm fishponds and island lakes.

Maricao is a small mountain town of around 8,000 inhabitants, located some thirty to forty minutes east of the city of Mayagüez on State Road 105 (PR 105).
A fish hatchery, usually referred to as el Vivero de Maricao, located in the outskirts of town is one of the main attractions for visitors.
Centro Vacacional de Maricao is surrounded by forest vegetation and nature very much alive with bird chirps, coquis, and night temperatures dropping to the fifties, Chimneys are provided in each room, although I personally doubt that many people would actually light them when temperatures are actually refreshingly cool.

The second version is the legend that in the days of the conquest a Indian called María fell in love with a Spanish military man. She betrayed her people in relation to an attack that the Indians had prepared against the Spaniards.
As the names of three of its districts indicate, Maricao had numerous indigenous people, many of which were fugitives of ranches of other regions.

Hacienda Juanita and the Maricao HQ are reportedly the most reliable places for this bird in the western mountains but we did not hear any in brief nighttime visits to both spots.

In the attack Maria was captured and tortured by her tribe on a tree which received the name Maricao in honor of her bravery.
Her name "Maria" and the suffix "cao" signifies martyrdom and sacrifice, thus Maricao or the "sacrifice of Maria" (Sanchez 16).

RANGE AND POPULATION LEVEL: Extant breeding populations of the Puerto Rican sharp-shinned hawk were located in the mountain forest of the Maricao Commonwealth Forest, Toro Negro Commonwealth Forest, Guilarte Commonwealth Forest, Carite Commonwealth Forest and Caribbean National Forest (Cruz and Delannoy 1986).
In 1992, 285.6 square kilometers censused yielded 82 sharp-shinned hawks; 40 in Maricao forest, 30 in Toro Negro forest, 10 in the Carite forest and two in the Caribbean National Forest.
