Topic: Marie Antoinette (2006 film)

Film Fest Journal: Marie Antoinette, 2006
It gives a kind of (blatantly) artificial, candy colored glazing to Marie Antoinette's environment, a bit like the way a child (since she was only 14 when she came there) would see this baroque wonderland of Versailles.
Her soundtrack also really works well in the film, the music is distanced enough that it's almost nostalgic (like a K-tel record :)) and is combined with some classical (Romanticist period) music, so the reworking is not as jarring as it may seem from the concept.
I really liked the first half of this film (when it was more about her "strangerness"), but I thought that the second half really lost its steam, when it became more of a portrait of boredom and excess (and not in a novel, Antonioni way).

 MovieMartyr.com - Marie Antoinette
The obligatory events of Marie Antoinette’s life, such as her attempts to conceive, all promise the viewer with dramatic developments, only to stymie those expectations by seeming not to matter at all.
The plot, as it is, is at least somewhat historically accurate, but is told from a point of view that’s insulated by any of the outside factors that defined Marie Antoinette in the public eye (she dismisses the rumors that swirl around her as “ridiculous stories”).
When she opts to put an aggressively modern dressing montage set to “I Want Candy” right after a scene of Marie Antoinette bursting into tears, it’s difficult to tell if she’s trying to underscore her heroine’s vapidity, striking an ironic pose, or going after something more complicated.

Eye for Film : Marie Antoinette (2006) Film Review
Hers is a film in which the audience are made to feel like eavesdroppers catching whispered court gossip.
Based on the book by noted historian and feminist Lady Antonia Fraser, Marie Antoinette follows the life of the young Austrian princess from the point at which she leaves her home to marry the Dauphin to the point at which both she and her husband must acknowledge that the revolution has come.
Marie Antoinette can be seen as a cutting feminist diatribe, or the work of a director, who views the universe and all its contradictions as nothing more than her artist\'s palette.

From her betrothal and marriage to Louis XVI at 15 to her reign as queen at 19 and to the end of her reign as queen and ultimately the fall of Versailles.
Continuity: When Marie Antoinette's brother arrives and before they sit down for tea he tastes a cookie.
By the way it is quite funny to see the new attitude of Sofia Coppola not insisting too much now on her "certain vision of Marie Antoinette real life".

The argument came in the context of another discussion, wherein I was attempting to reassure some colleagues that Marie Antoinette did not, in fact, say "let them eat cake," and that furthermore, had she said that, it would have been a positive thing to say.
