Ontario fears Tory Senate reform plans will lead to constitutional quagmire   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Marie Bountrogianni, the province's intergovernmental affairs minister, issued the warning Thursday as she urged a Senate committee to reject Harper's proposal to impose eight-year term limits on senators.
Bountrogianni said Senate reform is not a priority for Ontarians, and urged the government to focus instead on more important matters, such as fixing the so-called fiscal imbalance and bolstering funding for post-secondary education and infrastructure.
Bountrogianni's Ontario-first approach did not sit well with several senators, who noted that the Senate was designed to protect regional interests, a counter-balance for smaller provinces against Ontario's domination of the elected chamber.

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Marie Bountrogianni introduced legislation which, if passed, will allow voters in next October's provincial election to cast ballots in a referendum on whether they want a different electoral system.
But the legislation calls for a 60 per cent majority in order to change the current electoral system - a threshold that had critics up in arms and citing the examples of British Columbia and Prince Edward Island, where similar efforts have all but collapsed in controversy.
Defending the high threshold, Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Marie Bountrogianni said the adoption of a new electoral system would be such "a fundamental change" to Ontario's democracy that it requires a strong majority.
