About half of Mariel exiles polled feel that U.S. citizens should be allowed to travel to Cuba compared to about 34 percent of exiles who came before 1980 and about 60 percent of those who came after 1980.
Economically, Mariel refugees have become part of what Bendixen calls the Cuban ''economic miracle.'' They have practically caught up to older exiles in their levels of success and are in almost every respect a model immigrant class, much like the Cuban exiles who arrived in South Florida in the 1960s.
While Mariel exiles are less likely to go to church every week than Cuban immigrants who came before and after them, they are still likely to attend church at least a few times a year.

The Mariel boatlift was a mass movement of Cubans who departed from Cuba's Mariel Harbor to the United States between April 15 and October 31, 1980.
The boatlift was precipitated by a sharp downturn in the Cuban economy, leading to simmering internal tensions on the island and a bid by up to 10,000 Cubans to gain asylum in the Peruvian embassy.
The Mariel boatlift is depicted in the films Scarface (1983), The Perez Family (1995), and Before Night Falls (2000).

 Mariel Boatlift
Boats with Cuban migrants began departing Mariel, Cuba, in April, 1980 after Castro declared the port of Mariel "open." Hundreds of small craft departed Miami and sailed to Mariel, where they loaded up with refugees, in most cases more than the craft was designed to carry safely, and then attempted to return to Miami.
In 1980, the Attorney General directed the Bureau of Prisons to provide detention space for criminal and mentally ill Mariel Cubans who could not be safely detained in INS temporary detention centers or at any of the resettlement camps established to process the Mariel Cubans.
The majority of the Mariel Cubans in Bureau custody today are not eligible for repatriation under the agreement and will most likely remain in detention or be released under INS parole authority to the community or to a pre-release treatment facility.

Juan Clark, in "The 1980 Mariel Exodus: An Assessment and Prospect," estimate that "about 50,000 men came without their families." He further estimates that about 20,000 men were forced by the Cuban government to be separated from their spouses in coming to the United States, in violation of their human rights.
Mariel refugee women represent 4.6% of the total females, while Mariel homosexual men represent 4.0% of the total individuals housed in the Women's Detention Center on December 26, 1980.
