Old folks say some Visayan fishermen, forced by strong currents in what is now Surigao Strait, sought refuge in one of the huts somewhere in the province, the Mamanua tribe thought the fishermen wanted to occupy the hut by force "agaw".
Congressman Reynaldo P. Honrado of lone District of Surigao introduced House Bill No. 3050 during the Fourth Congress, otherwise known as R.A. No. 2786 eventually created the provinces of Surigao del Norte and del Sur out of the Province of Surigao.
Hence, in 1960, Surigao del Sur became the 56th province of the Philippines.Surigao del Sur was formally organized and separated from her mother province Surigao del Norte on September 18, 1960, thereby creating Surigao del Sur.
