MARIJAMPOLE, Lithuania, Jan 11 (AFP) - Soviet-era open-air cages may have been phased out, but living conditions in Lithuania's dilapidated and overcrowded Marijampole prison fall far short of the standards expected of a country about to join the European Union on May 1.
Marijampole in the southwest, which houses repeat offenders, has an official limit of 1,216 inmates, but until recently contained almost twice as many, and even today is 25 percent over capacity.
Two years ago in Alytus, in the south of the country, 220 of the penitentiary's 1,900 inmates were found to be carrying the HIV virus.

Kazys Grinius was born in the village of Selema-Buda, the Sasnava Rural District, the then Marijampole District, on December 17, 1866, in the family of a bright peasant who owned a farm of 17 hectares.
With K. Grinius' concern a Lithuanian theatre was established in Marijampole, in which on May 28, 1905 for the first time in public, with the participation of the choir, the performance Amerika pirtyje (America in the Bath-house) was shown.
For his active participation in Lithuanianism more than once he was confined in a jail in Marijampole by gendermes, unless at the end of 1908 he again was exiled to Vilnius, where he lived until 1910.

 Investors express interest in terminal construction
VILNIUS - Potential investors intend to put in around 500 million litas (150 million euros) to further the construction of a new rail freight terminal close to the town of Marijampole, located in southern Lithuania, the daily newspaper Lietuvos Zinios reported on March 16.
The plan is to build the freight-handling terminal on a 250-hectare site between the old railway track and the projected new European gauge railway line.
Augustinas Majauskas, a member of the group set up in Marijampole to promote the European project, known as Rail Baltica, said a French firm that is engaged in freight transportation across Europe has shown a keen interest in the freight terminal project and is ready to invest around $100 million.
