Marin Marais (31 May 1656, Paris 15 August 1728, Paris) was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Lully and of the viol player Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe.
He was hired as a musician in 1676 to the royal court of Versailles.
He featured as a central character in the film Tous les matins du monde (1991), which is an atmospheric meticulously imagined life of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, and Marais' music figured prominently in that film.

Marin Marais was the central figure in the French school of bass-viol composers and performers that flourished during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Marais entered the royal orchestra as a soloist in 1685 and about the same time became a member of the orchestra of the Acadèmie Royale de Musique.
Although Marais' operas, trio sonatas, and other compositions were widely performed during his lifetime, the most significant part of his musical output is represented by the five books of Pièces de Violes that he produced over a period of forty years, between 1686 and 1725.

Marin Marais, now renowned among all lovers of music as one of the supreme masters of the Baroque period, was born in Paris in 1656.
Despite his youth, the young Marin Marais, clearly gifted, was taken on at an early age as a pupil by Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, the preeminent violist da gamba of the period; later he was accepted as a student by the celebrated composer, Jean-Baptiste Lully.
Marais slipped under the cabin where he could hear Sainte Colombe and profit from his approach to certain passages and bow strokes that masters of the art like to keep to themselves." There is a certain piquancy in this image of Marais spying on his elder.

He studied bass viol with Sainte-Colombe and composition with Lully, joining the royal orchestra in 1676; spent his entire life in Paris as a famous virtuoso on the instrument, retiring from royal service in 1725.
Marais' most important compositions, however, are the five collections of music for one to three bass viols with figured bass published between 1686 and 1725.
Marais' Pièces en trio pour les flutes, violon, et dessus de viole (Paris, 1692) are regarded as the first appearance of the trio sonata in France.

Marais, known as one of the greatest violists of his era, was performing in Lully's of his era, was performing in Lully's orchestra at the court of Louis XIV by the time he was twenty and soon became the "time beater" at the opera.
In applying for Sainte Colombe's tutelage, he tells of a life where childhood has been lost (he has spent practically all his formative years as a choir boy) and an environment that is unpleasant and noisy (his father is a shoemaker and at their house hide is soaked in vats of urine to soften it).
Marais becomes successful, marries, fathers children (thirteen of them, to be exact), and enjoys the adulation of his students.
