Michigan Engineering | Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering | Overview   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Since the design of modern marine systems encompasses many engineering fields, graduates of this department are called upon to handle diverse professional responsibilities; therefore, the program includes study in the fundamentals of the physical sciences and mathematics as well as a broad range of engineering aspects that constitute design for the marine environment.
In marine dynamics, the student studies the vibrations of marine structures and engines and the rigid body responses of the vessel to wind and waves.
The Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratories (MHL) are part of the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, and are located on the first floor of West Hall on Central Campus.

The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering five year degree course is the responsibility of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Section (SAEN), the smaller autonomous department of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), the engineering institute which is part of the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL).
The Naval and Architecture Marine Engineering degree course started at IST in the 1980/81 year as a natural evolution from the specialisation courses which took place between 1976 and 1980 under the auspices of the Technical Unversity of Lisbon and which were designated as a degree in Naval Construction Engineering.
The course provides the necessary education for graduates to be trained in the methods of design and calculation of vessels as well as other maritime systems, such as floating structures with an integrated perspective of a working and living environment, of a propellered vessel and a floating structure.
