The Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal is awarded to Marine Corps personnel who land on foreign territory, engage in operations against armed opposition, or who operate under circumstances deemed to merit special recognition and for which no campaign medal has been awarded.

 MARINE CORPS UNIFORM REGULATIONS, CHAP 5
Marines who served in or were attached to another branch of the U.S. military services and received a decoration, unit award, or service award of comparable criteria to one issued by the naval service may wear the award on Marine Corps uniforms, unless otherwise prohibited by these regulations.
Marines who were assigned to the cited unit while in a civilian status must be specifically included by name in the recommendation or citation to be eligible to wear the award on the uniform.

 Marine Corps Legacy Museum - Lewis B. Puller
A Born 26 June, 1898 at West Point Virginia, Puller enlisted in the Corps in 1918 but the war ended while the Reserve Second Lieutenant was still in the States and he was subsequently discharged.
Not one to long stay a civilian, Puller immediately enlisted in the Regular Corps as a Private and was soon in Haiti where he served as an Officer of the Gendarmerie d'Haiti.
Puller's words had much to do with the Corps retaining the right to train its recruits, as several outspoken civilians were calling for that effort to be transferred to the US Army.

The medal is awarded to naval personnel who have actually landed on foreign territory and engaged in operations against Armed opposition or operated under circumstances which are deemed to merit special recognition and for which no service or Campaign medal exists.
Navy and marine Corps personnel who served in the Yangtze River Valley, Shanghai, China, or the surrounding waters between 3 September, 1926 and 21 October, 1927, or from 1 march, 1930, to 31 December, 1932, were eligible for award of this medal.
Personnel who were awarded the China Service Medal for service during the period 1937to 1939 and were also eligible for the award for the period 1945 to 1957 were awarded a 3/16th inch bronze star for attachment to the service and suspension ribbons of the initial award in lieu of a second medal.

The Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal is awarded to members of the Marine Corps Reserve who, subsequent to July 1, 1925, have fulfilled certain designated military service requirements.

He was awarded both Medals of Honor for the same action near Villers-Cotterets, France, on the morning of 18 July 1918, during the Soissons engagement.
The famous Marine was wounded in action twice but since there is no record of either wound at the Navy's Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, he was never awarded the Purple Heart.
He received a field appointment to the rank of second lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve on 26 September 1918 and was selected for a commission in the regular Marine Corps on 31 March 1919.

The Wake Island Device is authorized for any sailor or marine who was awarded the Navy or Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal through the defense of Wake Island in the opening days of U.S. involvement in the Second World War.
To be awarded the Wake Island Device, a service member must have been awarded either the Navy Expeditionary Medal, or the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, and must have served on Wake Island between the dates of December 7 and December 22, 1941.
When wearing the Expeditionary Medal as a ribbon, the Wake Island Device is annotated by a silver “W” device, centered on the decoration.
