Prior to 1929, all transportation to and from the island was by ferry from Port Royal docks to the Recruit Depot docks.

The Marine Corps is the second smallest of the five branches of the United States armed forces, with 176,000 active and 40,000 reserve Marines as of 2002.
The Marine Corps was initially composed of infantry combat forces serving aboard naval vessels, responsible for security of the ship, its captain and officers, offensive and defensive combat during boarding actions, by acting as sharpshooters, and carrying out amphibious assaults.
The Marine Corps has a widely-held reputation as a fierce and effective fighting force and the Marines take pride in their gung-ho attitude, are indoctrinated with a strong belief in their chain of command and the importance of esprit de corps, a spirit of enthusiasm and pride in themselves and the Corps.

Realigned instruction, the addition of Marine Corps "core values" acculturation, and the introduction of an intensive 54-hour "Crucible" during the 11th week of training are three noteworthy refinements adopted in recent years to meet the changing missions of the Corps and to address societal changes in recruits.
Recruits face the shock of their changed life style from the moment they are ordered off their bus by their receiving drill instructors--"DIs," in the parlance of recruit training--to follow painted yellow steps on the pavement that guide them to their initial processing point, haircuts, and gear issue.
Recruits are allowed to sleep a total of only eight hours--in two four-hour periods--during the Crucible, and they are given just two-and-a-half "MREs" (meals, ready to eat) as rations during their 54 hours in the field.

Parris Island, though not the site of this first English settlement, is part of the present Beaufort County of South Carolina, and thus was drawn into the stream of British colonial and United States history.
The Marine Corps had its first contact with Parris Island slightly less than four hundred years after Jean Ribaut sailed into the harbor that he named Port Royal, the name by which the location of their installations on Parris Island was to be officially known by the Navy and Marine Corps until World War I.
The Marine Corps itself was on trial in a moral sense for the death of the six recruits, in his opinion, and he believed that a reorganization of training procedures at Parris Island, "insofar as the supervision thereof is concerned," was necessary.

It's also important that the recruits learn to use gentle pressure on the rifle trigger to "squeeze off" their shots rather than to abruptly jerk back the trigger, which most often results in off-target strikes, Soignet explained.
