Mobile phone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A mobile phone, also known as a cellphone, smartphone, mobile, or handphone, is an electronic telecommunications device with the same basic capability as a conventional fixed line telephone, but which is also entirely portable and is not required to be connected with a wire to the telephone network.
Mobile phones are also distinct from cordless telephones, which generally operate only within a limited range of a specific base station.
Professional mobile radio systems are very similar to cellphone systems and attempts have even been made to use TETRA, the international digital PMR standard, to implement public mobile networks, but normally PMR systems are sufficiently separate from the phone network to not really be considered phones but rather radios.

Marine and mobile radio telephony - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Short wave radio is used because it bounces between the ionosphere and the ground, giving a modest 1,000 watt transmitter (the standard power) a world-wide range.
Marine radiotelephony first become common in the 1930s, and was used extensively for communications to ships and aircraft over water.
This is called "marine radiotelegraphy", but in practice the equipment is a normal shortwave radio with an attachment that generates and receives audio tones in order to drive the teletype.

Mobile phone - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Mobile phones are designed to work on cellular networks and contain a standard set of services that allow phones of different types and in different countries to communicate with each other.
Mobile phones do not only support voice calls; they can also send and receive data and faxes (if a computer is attached), send short messages (or "text messages"; see SMS), access WAP services, and provide full Internet access using technologies such as GPRS.
Earlier mobile phones were fairly simple and security wasn't much of a concern, but in 2004, even basic phones can send and receive text messages which makes them vulnerable to attack by worms and viruses.

 Radio
Radio is a technology that allows for the transmission of signals by modulation of electromagnetic waves.
A radio wave is created whenever a charged object accelerates with a frequency that lies in the radio frequency (RF) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Although the word 'radio' is used to describe this phenomenon, the transmissions which we know as television, radio, radar, and cell phone are all in the class of radio frequency emissions.
