 Worms
Marine worms are grouped into at least ten different phyla, which means that these groups are only distantly related.
Many marine worms belong to the segmented Annelids, which include the Oligochaetes such as the terrestrial earthworms, the marine Polychaetes such as Eunice aphroditois, and freshwater preferring Hirudinae such as the leeches.
Marine worms live under boulders of rocky ocean shores, among the holdfasts of algae, in mud, sandy mud and in sand, while others build tubes in which to shelter.

The creature was found on a minke carcass in relatively shallow water close to Tjarno Marine Laboratory on the Swedish coast.
Such "zombie worms", as they are often called, are known from the deep waters of the Pacific but their presence in the North Sea is a major surprise.
To their astonishment, it hosted a type of marine worm previously only thought to exist at great ocean depths - down to almost 3km in the Pacific on the bones of gray whales.

WASHINGTON - Worms anchored to the skeleton of a young gray whale in a watery canyon off the coast of California are the first known whalebone-eating marine worms.
The female worms are illustrated both in their tubes and with a whalebone “cutaway,” to reveal their large ovisacs and extensive roots that invade the bone.
The worms are topped with red or red-and-white striped feathery structures called “palps.” Hemoglobin in the palps provides the red color and captures oxygen for both the worms and the bacteria living inside them.

North Sea marine worm discovered - Natural History Museum
A new species of marine worm called Osedax mucofloris (which means bone-eating snot-flower) has been found surviving in one of the best-studied marine environments on the planet, the shallow water environment of the North Sea.
In August 2004 the scientists studied a bone from the carcass and were surprised to find a species of marine worm (Osedax) that had previously been thought to exist only in a deep-sea environment.
Glover and Dahlgren have been comparing the worms with similar 'zombie worm' species that scientists from Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute have recently recovered from a deep-sea 'whale-fall' (the disintegrated carcass of a whale) off the coast of California.

Discovery of a unique symbiosis between bacteria  and a marine worm
These marine relatives of earthworms have no mouth or gut and are dependent on their symbionts for their nutrition.
Dubilier and her colleagues were therefore very surprised when they discovered an oligochaete worm with chemoautotrophic symbionts thriving in an environment in which, at first, they were not able to detect any sulfide.
However, for the worm and its symbionts to grow, energy sources must be taken up from the environment, such as dissolved organic compounds that occur in the pore waters of marine sediments.

The marine worm species that have evolved to take advantage of the guts of marine mammals may therefore play a greater ecological role than others in the replenishment of the zooplankton by spawn production.
It now becomes evident that marine mammals such as seals also perform this ecological service, making direct contributions to zooplankton maintenance by hosting marine worms and shedding their live spawn into the water.
Marine ecosystem productivity is dropping, this is very serious, and we do not yet appreciate all of the ways in which the ancient interdependent marine species naturally support one another.

Fish populations could collapse | WORLD | NEWS | tvnz.co.nz
Extending this pattern into the future, the scientists calculated that by 2048 all species would be in collapse, which the researchers defined as having catches decline 90% from the maximum catch.
This applies to all species, from mussels and clams to tuna and swordfish, said Boris Worm, lead author of the study, which was published in the current edition of the journal Science.
The decline in marine biodiversity is largely due to over-fishing and destruction of habitat, Worm said in a telephone interview from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Zotob Worm Infects Marine Corps Network on Okinawa
Most Navy and Marine Corps systems on Okinawa use the Windows 2000 operating system, which is most vulnerable to the Zotob worm, according to McKnight Zotob replicates itself until storage space on a computer or network is filled and it makes computers consistently shut down and reboot, McKnight said.
In the event that a worm or virus did penetrate the NMCI network, identifying and eradicating the problem would be much easier, he added.
Marines returning from deployments or reintroducing portable systems into the Okinawa network need to have their systems cleaned, scanned and patched before reconnecting them.

Although only fourteen worms were needed for each treatment, the extra worms were prepared as back ups if one or two died, so only ten of the worms were transferred to the test sediment.
Second, the worm's fecal coils on the surface are semi-gelatinous and are easily removed from the surface without being mixed with the existing surface sediment.
The feeding rate of the worms varies greatly from worm to worm regardless of its feeding conditions, namely, whether the worm previously feed on high or low TOC sediment; however, the low nutrient sediment worms ingest more sediment, presumably to meet its nutritional needs in a sediment of low nutrients.

It is thought to produce the green gelatinous egg masses found on the shore, usually attached to seaweed, although there is no evidence to corroborate this assumption (Fish and Fish, 1996).
