The Mariner 5 spacecraft was the fifth in a series of spacecraft used for planetary exploration in the flyby mode.
Mariner 5 was a refurbished backup spacecraft for the Mariner 4 mission and was converted from a Mars mission to a Venus mission.
Mariner 5 was launched on June 14, 1967, and arrived in the vicinity of Venus on October 19, 1967.

Mariner 5 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mariner 5 was a spacecraft of the Mariner program that carried a complement of experiments to probe Venus' atmosphere with radio waves, scan its brightness in ultraviolet light, and sample the solar particles and magnetic field fluctuations above the planet.
Mariner 5 was actually built as a backup to Mariner 4, but after the success of the Mariner 4 mission, it was modified (by reversing and reducing the size of the solar panels and adding a thermal shield) for the Venus mission.
The operations of Mariner 5 ended in November 1967 and it is now defunct in a heliocentric orbit.

Mariner 4 was the first spacecraft to fly by Mars and obtain close-up pictures of the Red Planet.
Mariner 4 imaged a large, ancient crater on Mars and confirmed the existence of a thin martian atmosphere, composed of carbon dioxide.
Mariner 7 took a total of 126 images of Mars and, combined with data from Mariner 6, was able to help establish the mass, radius and shape of the planet, as well as discovering that its southern polar ice cap was composed of carbon dioxide.

Powered by four solar panels, the spacecraft itself weighed 244.9kg, minus propellant, and was originally a back-up for the Mariner 4 fly-by of Mars.
Mariner 5 arrived at Venus one day after the unfortunate Soviet probe Venera 4 had disappeared without trace beneath its cloud tops.
The fact that Mariner 5 could be adapted for Venus when it was originally destined for Mars is a testimony to the adaptability of the Mariner design.

The Mariner's recourse to moral and religious sentiments during his tale seems necessary in order for him to communicate at all; but the disjunction between sentiment and actual experience is poignant.
A similar domestication of the Mariner's state is made through his later appeal to the kirk full of people, praying to the God who "made and loveth all" (617).
In this way the Mariner is distanced from his own experience; the retelling fails to resolve his sense of disturbance as a result, and must be attempted ever anew.

Mariner's cameras also checked their sharp focus on stars to show that they had not degraded from the heater failure.
Mariner 10 was well outside the hydrogen corona, thus being in a superior position to Skylab, which was also being used to observe the comet.
Mariner had by now warmed up sufficiently in its approach to the Sun so that some of the heaters were no longer needed.

Mariners immediately quickly found themselves operating in near-war conditions, as the US was expanding the range and scope of naval patrols to help protect shipments of material to Britain against German U-boats.
The Mariner was stripped down of all non-essential items, fitted with specially modified beaching gear, turned into the wind, and then took off from the dry lake bed, finally arriving in San Diego with no further trouble.
From 5 to 7 demilitarized Mariners were used by a Columbian air transport company in the late 1940s, but the company folded after a year or so in operation, and apparently a handful of Mariners flew with US civil companies as cargo haulers for a time.
