Marinus was neo-Platonist philosopher, was born in Neapolis, Palestine; he was converted at an early age to the old pagan Greek religion.

During this period the professors of the old pagan Greek religion suffered severe persecution at the hands of the Christians and Marinus was compelled to seek refuge at Epidaurus.
