Review - Mario Kart: Double Dash!! // GameCube /// Eurogamer
Double Dash meanwhile has six cups, the first four made up of four tracks, a "Grand Slam" All Cup Tour challenge that has you racing 16 in a random order bookended by Luigi Circuit and Rainbow Road, and an extra "engine class", oddly, which opens all five previous cups to replay as mirrored alternatives.
Choose Mario and Luigi, for example, in their kart, and you'll be racing with the same sort of feel as you would have if you picked either of them in any of the previous games.
I don't know whether they just played with 50cc karts the whole time (which, yes, are noticeably slower and easier to handle at top speed than their 150cc cousins) or whether they were just upset with a snatch of Karting after a week of long, hard and thoroughly draining 1300 mile-per-hour F-Zero GX.

G4 - Feature - 'Mario Kart: Double Dash!!' (GCN) Review
It's hard to believe it's been over six years since "Mario Kart 64" was released, but that's how long we've had to wait for a console follow-up in the classic kart-racing series.
There are 16 characters to choose from, including such staples as Mario, Luigi, and Bowser, as well as more obscure choices like Paratroopa or Birdo from "Super Mario Bros. 2." Each is classified as light, medium, or heavy, which affects what size kart they can ride in, and subsequently their acceleration and speed.
"Mario Kart: Double Dash!!" is one of those rare videogames that appeals to gamers of all types -- young or old, male or female.

All in all there really isn’t much to the sound of MKDD, as you probably wouldn’t be able to hear it over all the trash talking between you and three of your friends anyway, but what there is is solid and since races are over relatively fast the music never gets too grating.
This is the main reason MKDD succeeds where others fail, it’s not just a racing game where you can go crazy with items and just end up winning, strategy is key to victory and careful planning with every item use is crucial.
This is a new thinking man’s Mario Kart, hanging out in last place for two-thirds of the race and counting on some cheap items to use on your opponents alone isn’t going to cut it anymore.

One would think that adding an extra character to a kart would be such a radical change to the game’s structure, that Nintendo would be taking a huge risk and could ruin the reputation of one of their most popular games.
