Mario Lanza was born in South Philadelphia, Pa. as Alfredo Arnold Cocozza on January 31,1921.
Mario's mother, Maria Lanza, emigrated to America at the tender age of 6 months from a town not far from Filignano called Tocco da Casauria, in the Abruzzi region.
Mario, then known as 'Freddie', was raised in an atmosphere of opera and Caruso recordings which were played mostly by his father on a daily basis at home.

Mario Lanza - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lanza was able to sing all types of music, although the rather small size of his voice and its limited dynamic range wouldn't have equipped him for a full-fledged career on the lyric stage.
MGM's contract with Lanza required him to commit to the studio for six months, and at first Lanza was able to combine his film career with his operatic one, singing two acclaimed performances as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly for the New Orleans Opera Association in April 1948.
Lanza then moved to Rome, Italy in May 1957, where he worked on the film Seven Hills of Rome and returned to live performing in a series of acclaimed concerts throughout Britain, Ireland and the European Continent.

Because of his involvement with Hollywood, Lanza was never taken seriously either by the majority of the so-called music critics or by the musicals snobs, who looked down their noses at a singer of operatic capabilities who was making films, and very successfully, in Hollywood.
Lanza made his debut as Fenton in the The Merry Wives of Windsor to rave reviews, but shortly after his studies were interrupted and he was inducted into the Army for the next two years.
Lanza was probably the first successful crossover artist, equally at home with operatic arias, operetta, show tunes, love songs and virtually every other song form.

Mario Lanza possessed "one of the truly great natural tenor voices of the past century – a voice of beauty, passion, and power!" So declares Placido Domingo in his preface to Armando Cesari's 2004 biography, Mario Lanza: An American Tragedy.
Lanza, however, was dissatisfied with his singing, and after six appearances left the show to work on his vocal technique.
Lanza's voice, as Rosati had quickly discovered, was a perfectly placed lirico spinto of extended range (low A to high D) with a luscious baritonal colouring in the middle and lower registers.

Mario's vocal prowess, his sound, his passion, his charm and charisma walked right through the haze of marijuana smoke and the chemical fog of LSD and would lift these people right up and out of their sometimes semi-conscious parameters and float them off into a state of thrilled anesthesia.
Mario did...and when he was finished, Dean and Jerry excused themselves and simply said good night to the audience...their performance for the night was finished..

Lanza reached the pinnacle of that film career in 1951 with the release of The Great Caruso, a film that "opened to overall critical and public acclaim," and that sold more than 100,000 soundtrack LPs prior to that release (119-20).
Lanza succeeded not only in renewing interest in opera, but also in introducing it to countless cinema-goers who had previously been oblivious to the art form.
And Maria Callas, whose artistry Lanza greatly admired, had described the Italian tenor as "Carusso’s successor." Her "biggest regret [was] not to have had the opportunity to sing with the greatest tenor voice [she’d] ever heard" (271).

Mario Lanza (31 January 1921 – 7 October 1959) was an Italian-American operatic tenor and Hollywood movie star who enjoyed success in the 1950s.
His voice was considered by many to rival that of Enrico Caruso, whom Lanza portrayed in the 1951 film The Great Caruso.
A highly influential artist, Lanza has been credited with inspiring the careers of successive generations of opera singers, including Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, Leo Nucci and Joseph Calleja, as well as those of singers with seemingly different backgrounds, and influences, his RCA Victor label mate, Elvis Presley amongst them, being the most notable example.

Lanza was the original singer of that song and it has never, to my admittedly limited knowledge, been sung better or even matched since he first sang it.

A tragic figure, Lanza’s thrilling, if undisciplined, tenor brought him two million-selling singles, ‘Be My Love’ and ‘The Loveliest Night of the Year’, a million-selling album, 'The Student Prince', and a brief screen career as the incarnation of the voice of opera.
A success, the teaming was repeated by MGM for 'The Toast of New Orleans', which produced Lanza’s first million-seller, the Sammy Cahn and Nicholas Brodszky song, ‘Be My Love’, before he starred as Caruso himself in 'The Great Caruso'.
Thus for MGM’s remake of Sigmund Romberg’s 'Student Prince' Lanza’s role was limited to dubbing the singing for Edmund Purdom.
