Cinema of Italy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was only at the end of the 1920s that the industry began to recover, with innovative films directed by Alessandro Blasetti, Mario Camerini and his cousin Augusto Genina.
His films (often with Peppino De Filippo and almost always with Mario Castellani) expressed a sort of neorealistic satire, in the means of a guitto as well as with the art of the great dramatic actor he also was, like Pier Paolo Pasolini would have shown.
Italian Comedy is generally considered to have started with Mario Monicelli's I soliti Ignoti (Big Deal on Madonna Street) and derives its name from the title of Pietro Germi's Divorzio all'Italiana (Divorce Italian Style - 1961).

In his films (often with Peppino De Filippo, quite always with Mario Castellani) a sort of neorealistic satire was expressed in the means of a guitto as well as with the art of the great dramatic actor he also was, like (too late but finally at least) Pier Paolo Pasolini would have shown.
Italian Comedy is generally considered to have started with Mario Monicelli's I soliti Ignoti (Persons Unknown) and derives its name from the title of Pietro Germi's Divorzio all'Italiana (Divorce Italian Style - 1961) and for long time this definition was used with a derogatory intention.
Vittorio Gassman, Ugo Tognazzi, Alberto Sordi, Claudia Cardinale, Monica Vitti, Nino Manfredi, were among the stars of these movies, that described the years of the economical reprise and investigated the costumes of Italians, a sort of self-ethnological research.

There was some talk of Mario Monicelli's episode not fitting in with the others, but the obvious reason it was dropped from international distribution was to cut down the length of the film.
Mario Monicelli's tale of frustrated newlyweds is a Neorealist exercise, sketching the day-to-day reality of love oppressed by economic concerns.
Monicelli's episode is handsomely produced and needs make no excuses, but viewers will probably be anxious to get on to the big names and sexy actresses of the later chapters.

A history and philosophy student at the Universities of Pisa and Milan, Mario Monicelli first yelled "Roll 'em" (in Italian, of course) when he co-directed a 16-millimeter short subject called I ragazzi dela via Paal (1935), inspired by Ferenc Molnar's The Boys of Paul Street.
Monicelli's first solo effort was Proibito (1954), which like many of his best films dealt with everyday folks who are mired down by their unwillingness to take risks and/or their inability to rise above their simple-minded attitudes.
Even when Monicelli's characters are firm in their convictions, they are prone to failure: An excellent example of this is his 1963 drama I compagni (The Conformist), a case history of a labor strike which, like Monicelli's earlier La Grand Guerra (The Great War, 1959) won Venice's Golden Lion Award.

Few Americans recognize the name of Italian director Mario Monicelli, but fans of foreign movies know many of his stars.
But it would be more than 15 years before he really made his mark as a true auteur, first spending time as a film critic, an assistant director and screenwriter, not to mention several years in the service during World War II.
His comedy, which could vary from subtle to slapstick, usually looked at ordinary, down-and-out people who struggle vainly to improve their lot, creating comic situations that could be moving, ridiculous or melancholic.

Big Deal on Madonna Street - Subtitle - DVD
Monicelli's laid-back approach ideally suits the story, as the would-be thieves are continually distracted and delayed in their quest for a seemingly easy-to-snatch safe.
Despite being somewhat buffoonish, the leads are also very believable and likable; Monicelli is interested as much in the characters as he is in the story.
Among the highlights are when Peppe tricks rival thief Cosimo into giving him the location of a safe; Mario's encounters with Carmela (played by a very young Claudia Cardinale); Cosimo's failed attempt to rob the pawn shop; and the final heist sequence, which is filled with inspired touches.

Monicelli manages to spoof not only the American gangster film, but also the Italian Neorealist cinema, those tiny, warmly-remembered films of the human struggle in postwar Italy such as SHOESHINE and THE BICYCLE THIEF.
The "gang" can't manage even a respectable stick-up, and as their plans for robbing a pawnbroker come to nutty fruition, Monicelli allows us plenty of time to savor these remarkable characters, so destitute of the requisite gangster brains and bravado, and yet so thoroughly engaging.
Monicelli's "gangsters" hardly deserve the name, and that is their grace.

A former film critic whose writing and directing career began in earnest after the end of WWII, Monicelli first gained attention with his satirical 1958 treatment of a bungled heist, "Big Deal on Madonna Street".
He has proved himself a master of satirical fl comedy, notably in films such as "The Great War" (1959) and "The Organizer" (1963), and his elicited fine performances from some of Italy's best actors, notably Vittorio Gassman and Marcello Mastroianni.
Monicelli also has a reputation for turning out uninspired commercial vehicles such as "Casanova '70" (1965) and "La Mortadella" (1971) in between his more "personal" projects.

Four directors were hired to create segments ostensibly based on the tales of Boccaccio: Fellini himself (in the lull between La Dolce Vita and 8-1/2), Luchino Visconti, Vittorio De Sica, and Mario Monicelli.
Monicelli's story, Renzo and Luciana, is an agreeable tale, full of everyday Roman life: an office worker (Marisa Solinas) must marry her boyfriend when she gets pregnant--although marriage is against company rules.
The finished product weighed in at a whopping 208 minutes, and Monicelli's segment was lopped off before the film showed at the Cannes Film Festival.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Big Deal on Madonna Street: The Criterion Collection
Yet, while Mario Monicelli's Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958) was an early crossover film, it wasn't made as such — in fact, it succeeds on its own merits and will appeal to anybody who enjoys crime capers or films noir.
Peppe tells the group that they must act "scientifically," but all are bumblers at best and easily distracted, as Mario falls for Ferribotte's sister, and Peppe falls for a woman he is supposed to be using to commit the crime.
Big Deal on Madonna Street is an appealing comedy that thoroughly follows the heist genre template while letting the characters provide the humor, and not the set pieces (though one of the best gags in Woody Allen's Small Time Crooks was obviously lifted from this film).
