Topic: Mario del Monaco

  Donella Del Monaco
His pièce de résistance was Verdi's Otello, an opera which was considered almost unperformable, on account of the difficulties it presented both vocally and in terms of interpretation, and for the need for a broad and full dramatic vocalisation which is rarely found.
The exceptional quality of Mario Del Monaco's vocal timbre has gone down in history; it was defined as golden, powerful and brilliant
Del Monaco's musical career was splendid; after studying in Pesaro and making his debut in Milan in 1941 with Madame Butterfly, he was acclaimed in the most important theatres all over the world.

Mario - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mario is in many ways an undeveloped character, with numerous details of his accepted biography having been created through a complex lore spawned from the imaginations of comic book artists and cartoon writers.
Mario also considers himself the biggest fan of Captain Lou Albano (another inside joke since Lou Albano himself was the one who portrayed Mario in the live action segments and provided his voice in the cartoon).
Mario Williams, the #1 draft pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, was also given the nickname "Super Mario", as was pro-cyclist, Mario Cipollini.

The only person on the scene who could give Del Monaco tit for tat is the formidable Irina Archipova, though as a result she sometimes forces the voice and becomes rather vulgar.
Therefore the coming of Del Monaco to Moscow was a major event in 1959 and the tenor met all expectations as he gave them what they thought was the one essential element of tenor singing: strong top notes, kept on as long as possible.
Del Monaco must have felt he was returning to his early days.

Monaco set the standard for the classification "dramatic tenor" or "tenore di forza" well into the early 1960’s.
Due to the dearth of true dramatic tenors after the war, del Monaco was tempted to sing the role of Otello far more often than was perhaps good for his vocal health, and found himself forced to curtail his repertoire as his top tones receded and his voice took on a wooden timbre.
With the rise of Franco Corelli at the Met, del Monaco confined his operatic appearances to Europe and Asia and made an occasional recording.

 Donella Del Monaco
The soprano Donella Del Monaco in an 18th Century costume, accompanied by a trio (18th Century flute-'cello-guitar), performs arias and pieces from the Venetian School, including the delightful and amusing "Canzoni da Battello" (Boating Songs) which she came across in her personal research and which she performs in various musical arrangements.
The "Canzoni" were admired even by Mozart during His stay in Italy, and were composed to enliven the parties held in the villas of the aristocracy, or the great public celebrations on boats and barges (from which they took their name).
There is also a more theatrical version where Donella Del Monaco will be flanked by two figures of the 'Comedia de l'Arte' - a Harlequin and a Colombina who move with the age- old gestures characteristic of the two characters of the Theatre of the Venetian School.
