Butler was the Populist party state chairman in 1894 and was a key participant in the negotiations that led to fusion with the Republicans.

Marion Butler and American Populism, by James L. Hunt. Introduction.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
This is a biography of Marion Butler, a North Carolina native who made his greatest mark in the 1890s as a leader in the Southern Farmers' Alliance and the Populist Party and as the only southern Populist ever to serve in the United States Senate.
Butler's aggressive leadership cannot easily be exorcised from Populism and contrasted with the movement's alleged "democratic" purpose without a more precise definition of that purpose; he was a duly elected Populist leader.
Butler's views confronted an enormous range of barriers, including localism, the nature of state-level politics, presidential politics, racism, opposition to federal power, intraparty factionalism, bribery, intimidation, violence, the strengths and weaknesses of individual leaders, the reactions of Republicans and Democrats, the need to develop a favorable media for the Populist message, and many others.
