Mariposa Grove is a sequoia grove located near Wawona, California in the southernmost part of Yosemite National Park, at 37°31′N 119°36′W.
It is the largest grove of Giant Sequoias in the park, with several hundred mature examples of the tree.
The Mariposa Grove was discovered by Galen Clark and Milton Mann, in 1857.

Galen Clark (March 28, 1814 – March 24, 1910) is known for his discovery of the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoia trees and for his role as Guardian of Yosemite National Park for 21 years.
This grant was the first of its kind, stating that it would protect Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias for, "public use, resort, and recreation...to be left inalienable for all time..." Galen then became the first "guardian of the grant".
Today, the Giant Sequoia that would have been the first of its kind to be seen by Clark upon his arrival at the Mariposa Grove is named and marked "The Galen Clark Tree", in memory of his contribution to the preservation of the Giant Sequoia ecosystem.

The grove is situated in a depression on a mountain ridge on the head waters of a branch of Big Creek, which empties into the south fork of the Merced River, near Wawona.
This grove, including four square miles of territory, was ceded to the State of California in trust as a public park in June, 1864, by the same Act of Congress that ceded the Yosemite Valley to the State under similar conditions.
This grove was named the Fresno Grove, as it was then in Fresno County, and which first discovered in 1857 contained about six hundred trees, one of the largest measuring eighty-three feet in circumference four feet above the ground.

The people in the picture give some idea how big this tree is. The Mariposa Grove was never exploited for lumber because the wood is not suitable for building- it splinters when milled.
Many of the trees in the Mariposa Grove have some branches which are as big as the trunk of a large regular tree.
The grove is only about 8 miles from Wawona and there is a trail between it and Wawona.

You can navigate the grove on foot (stay on the marked trails, the tree roots spread out along the ground and can be damaged by excessive foot traffic) or by a tram ride that circles the grove with stops along the way.

When we traveled from our temporary home in the Wawona campground (near the Mariposa Grove) to the valley (22 miles) the first time, I thought the scenery along the way was magnificent.
There are three groves of big trees in Yosemite National Park and one of them is the Mariposa Grove at the southern end of the park near Wawona.
Galen Clark came to the Wawona area in 1857 and he is credited with convincing President Lincoln to set aside the Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley to be protected.

To get to Mariposa Grove, you go in the South entrance (after paying your dues) and park in the parking lot that is on your right.
During the winter months, you have to park there because the 2 mile road to Mariposa Grove is blocked off due to the snow.
You can ski (if there's enough snow), or carry your skis and hike to the grove (where there is more snow), and ski there.
