	FEEFHS MAP ROOM - Background and MAP INDEX
		Poland did not exist as a nation for about 126 years prior to the end of World War I. However the Austrian, German and Russian partitions of Poland are shown as parts of their respective Empires on the maps in this Map Rooom.
		All of these maps show 19th century boundaries between countries and provinces (which some other maps do not).
		The divisions of the Austro-Hungarian and German Empires are clearly shown, as are the Russian guberniyas.

		Maritime university graduates continue to land better jobs and earn higher pay, says a new report released today, May 18, by the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission.
		The Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission was established in 1974 to assist institutions and governments in enhancing a post-secondary learning environment.
		The commission's 19 members are drawn from the Maritime provinces, and represent higher education institutions, provincial governments and the general public.

	Maritime Provinces
		One caution is the poor road signage in the Maritime Provinces, that made it difficult to know where certain roads would be intersecting or how far it was to a particular destination along that route or even what road you were on as the signs were not suitably located.
		During the trip, we traveled on four ferries; the first from Digby, NS to St. John, NB, the second from Wood Islands, PEI to Pictou, NS, and the third was an overnight ferry from North Sydney, NS to Channel-Port-aux-Basques, NL and the last being the return overnight ferry from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia.
		Visiting the Maritime Provinces was an excellent trip...we saw many different places, enjoyed the hospitality of the Canadian people, but I believe the people who live in the Maritime Provinces are the friendliest and warmest that I have come to know.

		The Maritime provinces, also the Canadian Maritimes or simply the Maritimes, is a region of eastern Canada on the Atlantic coast, consisting of the three provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.
		Maritime trading patterns shifted considerably from mainly trading with New England, Britain, and the Caribbean, to being focused on commerce with the Canadian interior, enforced by the federal government's tariff policies.
		British settlement of the Maritimes, as the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island came to be known, accelerated throughout the late 18th century and into the 19th century with significant immigration to the region as a result of Scottish migrants displaced by the Highland Clearances and Irish escaping the potato famine.

		Between 1861 and 1949, when Newfoundland, the last of the independent provinces joined the Canadian Confederation, a rich series of coins was produced for use in these individual regions.

		AMHERST, N.S.: The Maritime Lumber Bureau on behalf of lumber producers in Atlantic Canada welcomes the decision released late this afternoon, that the United States Department of Commerce (USDOC) International Trade Administration has amended its countervailing duty investigation to exclude the Maritime Provinces.
		Throughout much of the history of this dispute, the Maritime Provinces have been exempt from the various actions taken, including the 1986 Memorandum of Understanding on Softwood Lumber, the interim measures taken pursuant to Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, the 1991 countervailing duty investigation, and the recently expired Softwood Lumber Agreement.
		This is very positive news for the 160 sawmill members of the Maritime Lumber Bureau and the tens of thousands of people in small communities throughout the Atlantic region whose livelihoods depend on the lumber business.
