Mandated by the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002, the advisory group will advise DHS through the Coast Guard on matters such as national maritime security strategy and policy, actions required to meet current and future security threats, international cooperation on security issues, and security concerns of the maritime transportation industry.
The 10-year program expanded from 47 ships to 60 ships by the Maritime Security Act of 2003 also calls for increased payments, subject to annual appropriation.
The ships were selected by the Maritime Administration in consultation with the U.S. Department of Defense.
