Czerkawski's offensive skills were obvious from the moment the came to the NHL with Boston in 1994, three years after the Bruins picked him in the fifth round of the entry draft.
Czerkawski's first two seasons with the Islanders were no different than the previous four with Edmonton and Boston: excellent outings interspersed with benchings and limited ice time, this time on a team where Zigmund Palffy was counted on to provide the bulk of the offense.
Czerkawski has also learned about difficult off-ice aspects of being in the NHL While he's in North America playing hockey, his wife (he's separated from actress Izabella Scorupco) and three-year-old daughter are on the other side of the Atlantic.

Czerkawski, signed for just $1.05 million next season, will probably be re-paired with Yashin on the top line, assuming Yashin plays well enough to run that line (and in all fairness, Yashin was playing pretty well toward the end of last season).
One also has to wonder if Czerkawski fits into the Islanders' vision, presumably as a trapping, defense-centric team, short on stars and offense, but long on tedium and one goal wins.

Czerkawski is now part of a whole and his performance will affect the team, no? If he has no impact whatsoever then that 500k is definatly wasted.
Either he is the Czerkawski he's been every single year in the NHL but one or he's the Czerkawski who played for the Habs(and in the Swedish League, according to you) and either way it's not a big deal.
