Australian rules football - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Australian football, which is also known as Australian rules football, or less formally as "Aussie rules" or simply as "footy" is a code of football which originated in Melbourne, Australia.
Australian football is not yet large enough internationally for a FIFA-style governing body, so the AFL is primarily responsible for funding and governance and provides around A$500,000 annually for international development, especially junior programs.
For the centenary of the VFL/AFL in 1996, an Australian Football Hall of Fame was established.

Australian rules football (also known as "footy" or "Aussie Rules" in areas where it is the predominant winter sport) is a game played between two teams of 18 players, usually played on cricket ovals during the winter months.

In 1989, the Australian Football League (AFL) was born.
