Mark Andes was originally the bassist in the Californian jazz-rock group Spirit, best known for songs like "I Got A Line on You" and "Nature's Way" and albums The Family That Plays Together (Ode, 1968), and The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus (Epic, 1970).
In 1972, Andes and Spirit vocalist Jay Ferguson split to form Jo Jo Gunne, which explored more accessible power chord territory on four albums between 1972 and 1974.
Andes later played with Michael Clarke and Rick Roberts in Firefall, while Jay Ferguson went solo for a late '70s career in pop music, highlighted by the 1977 single "Thunder Island."

Had the Staehely Brothers from the Feedback album combined here rather than the Andes boys, the direction would have totally changed, and it is an interesting thought to ponder.
The five discs that make up the four Mercury 1970s releases from Spirit have great merit, and the best of this music could be combined with Epic/Legacy's Time Circle double CD to make for a nice four- or five-disc overview of this important set of sounds from an underrated band.

Born John Charles Andes on July 12, 1920, in Ocean City, New Jersey, Keith found work on radio singing and acting throughout his high school years.
Sadly, his final years were marred by extreme ill health, including bladder cancer, and he committed suicide in his Santa Clarita, California home at age 85.
