Mark Bell and Gez Varley met in Leeds, UK, in 1989 while being students in a curse of graphic design and photography.
Mark Bell was yet involved in music, and both of them was very interested at the time in acid house stuff like Phuture and Chicago Trax, inspired by labels like Transmat and Trax Records.
Preceded by a number of LFO remixes a works of Bjork’s singles, Bell started a long-term and musical relationship with the Icelandic singer as his “electronics and programming squire”, including work in the albums “Homogenic” (1997), “Dancing In the Dark” (2000), and “Medúlla” (2004).

LFO - Biography - AOL Music
The Sheffield techno duo of Mark Bell and Gez Varley have a reputation that, at first glance, might seem to exceed them.
Both Bell and Varley admit to roots in the early- and mid-'80s hip-hop and electro invasions as well as the more obvious British acid house explosion, and their affectation for thick electronic breaks, vocoder samples, and sparse, modal melodies derive largely from that source.
After resolving what Warp called his midrange crisis, Bell returned with the third LFO full-length, Sheath, in the fall of 2003 (officially, it was the first without Varley).

Since then, Mark Bell's been busy producing for the likes of Bjork and Depeche Mode, while Gez Varley has continued to release several albums worth of delicious trance-based electronica under his own name and the G-Man pseudonym.
While LFO certainly inspired a lot of people, no one ever really came close to imitating them, which is why their sound remains as unique and fresh today as it did yesterdecade.
I don't need to tell diehard LFO fans or Warp addicts to buy this — they already own it — but anyone else who never really took time to explore their sound (yet currently enjoy the likes of Autechre, Boards of Canada, Jega, et al) seriously needs to check it out pronto.

When LFO (Low Frequency Oscillation) formed in 1990, it comprised of two members: Mark Bell and Gez Varley.
Sheath is his first record in a long while and is full of the acid house foundation which "LFO" (the first track the duo ever wrote) was born in, as well as the successive decade or so of Aphex Twin style knob twiddlery which set the direction of so much electronic music.
It's Bell, turning me inside out as I try to dance and sing to songs that have no vocals and aren't meant to be danced by the recently erect knuckle-draggers in the audience.

Mark Bell has gone the way of fellow Warp labelmate Richard D. James it seems, still able to craft the odd brilliant moments of techno but mainly just producing tracks that sound like someone loading a game onto their Spectrum whilst banging on a dustbin lid.
